Black-and-Rufous Sengis in NA Zoos

At long last, thanks to the recent acquisition of an individual sengi to the Smithsonian National Zoo. I can now say for certain (with special thanks to @Andrew_NZP) that there are now five current holders of this species.

Currently, little information is known about the Smithsonian’s individual (let’s hope the information situation isn’t as bad as Omaha’s), yet the fact the number of holders was able to grow by one is already miraculous by itself!

Here is how the current population is listed, as of 02/06/2025

North America’s Black-and-Rufous Sengi Population
The following document is utilized as a record for all births, deaths, locations, and transfers of every black-and-rufous sengi in North America. Each facility is organized alphabetically, followed by the individuals organized by age and sex.

With the news that the Smithsonian is a current holder once again; there are now nine former holders listed below:
  • Louisville Zoo - after 2012?
  • Peoria Zoo - circa mid 2010s
  • Denver Zoo - uncertain
  • Staten Island Zoo - circa 2012?
  • Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden - mid to late 2000s?
  • Houston Zoo - after 2012?
  • Cleveland Metroparks Zoo - late 2000s-mid 2010s?
  • Zoo Boise - circa 2014?
  • Yale Peabody Museum - after 2009*

Separately, while looking at the former holders list of the species on ZooTierliste. I came across the following facilities, and wondered if any of these respective zoos actually held Black-and-Rufous Sengis at some point, or if the justifications behind their inclusion aren’t all that accurate?

  • Central Park Zoo
  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
  • Prospect Park Zoo
  • San Antonio Zoo
  • Stone Zoo
  • ZooTampa at Lowry Park

Finally, to close out my question (and therefore, this post); any insight on the respective zoos’ association with the species will be greatly appreciated.

Yes I only saw the one. Never had an opportunity to talk to a keeper so can't tell you if they plan on getting another individual or if they had another one (though ZTL listing says they confirmed via email they had 1.0 from Philly).

To quote the following (again, thanks to @Andrew_NZP), it seems that the Smithsonian’s individual must’ve came from Philadelphia; in addition to being sexed as a male.
