SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego News

I was looking at the journey to Atlantis aquarium from a distance, and I saw what I think was a sea turtle. Has there always been one in there?

This are the exhibits ranked on how badly they need to the renovated and upgraded in my opinion

Tier 1 modern exhibits that don’t need to updated any time soon.
Turtle reef, jewels of the Sea, journey to Atlantis, the entrance touch pools, ocean Explorer aquarium, manta aquarium, and the flamingos.
Tier 2 exhibits that could use updates but are fine and don’t need it immediately
Wild arctic, Dolphin point, sea lion point.
Tier 3 exhibits that desperately need updating
Shark encounter, penguin encounter, dolphin stadiums tanks, shipwreck rapids sea turtles, and the Orca tanks.
Tier 4 closed or abandoned that need replacement
Tide pools, aquaria world of the fishes, aquarium Del la Mar, freshwater aquarium, shipwreck rapids submarine

A new refreshed Orca encounter with new behaviors with music from believe and one ocean opened today.
I heard it was amazing! I hope they bring waterworks back at some point. the studies showed it was mentally stimulating and orcas reactd negatively if they didnt have human interaction.

I think the WILD ARTIC may be expanded or new beluga pools. Since MLC will be getting rid of their belugas, I feel the US parks may be the takers.

I think it would be a great boost to the US population, but I’m not sure it will happen. To my knowledge and last I checked, no permits have been applied for to import any belugas to the US, and that would be the first step. And the process seems lengthy, and I suspect Marineland will want to offload their cetaceans soon, as they really have no revenue coming in to support their care. Unfortunately, they will probably all end up in Asia.

Of course the sanctuary crowd is also pushing for the move of the belugas to their non-existent sanctuary. And we have seen how that has failed for the Sea Life Trust belugas that have been in their indoor exhibit almost the whole time since arriving in 2019…..

Even if they wanted to I don’t think there is room to expand wild arctic it’s surrounded and on all side by roller coasters they only way they could expand the beluga tank would be to remove and renovate the next door otter exhibit

Seems MLC already waiting permits for closure. Hoping some belugas catch us by surprise

Given the amount of bad publicity from the repeat early deaths of MLC Belugas previously imported, I'd be a bit surprised if SeaWorld took any on unless necessity dictated it. Lot of hassle and expense for poor guarantee of the animal surviving. Which is really unfortunate.

Saw a video on Youtube and it looks absolutely amazing. Certainly nostalgic in a sense to hear a lot of the Believe instrumentals played. I also appreciate the 'presentation' aspect a lot more - which combines a lot of the theatrical and educational aspects shows in the past have utilised.

Additionally, it also seems like the trainers have also gone back to wearing the black and white patterned wet suits (which they haven't worn since the Believe era).

It would have to be a “rescue” and even that would be tough.

Two more recent bottlenose dolphin births;

0.0.1 born January 19th

On June 10th, the theme park announced that 2 Atlantic bottlenose dolphins named Jupiter and Phin were born to mothers Corona and Cocoa in late 2024 and early 2025, respectively, which will be on display once they get a little older.

Amazing news! These are the first surviving calves born at San Diego in over 5 years - and both also born to first time mothers, Corona (2000) and Crunch (2008).

Both calves have also been confirmed to be male and are first cousins, with their mothers being half sisters.

I believe you meant Cocoa for the 2008-born dam — Crunch is her father, and both calves' grandfather :)

0.1 California sea lion "Fancy" passed away on May 2nd, 2025. Fancy was born at SeaWorld Orlando on July 8th, 1999, and transferred to the San Diego park on April 7th, 2001.

Additionally, while not directly relevant to SeaWorld San Diego, I thought I'd also note here that the Bahia Hotel's 1.0 harbor seal, Elmer, passed away on May 24th, 2025. Elmer was rescued by the Marine Mammal Care Center of Los Angeles on March 25th, 2023, and had a brief stay at SeaWorld San Diego from November 2024 to January of this year.

I think if everyone would like, I'll make a US pinnipeds thread sometime today so that facilities like this without their own threads on ZooChat can have their populations counted
