With so many changes happening lately and more to come, I thought now would be the best time to compile the complete species list that covers the entire campus. Previously I had 2 separate threads (1 for the Ocean Pavilion and 1 for Pier 59 and 60), but combining the two will make it easier to update and be better for those looking to keep track of the species at the Aquarium.

For those that are unfamiliar, our campus at the Aquarium is similar to that of the Tennessee Aquarium is the best way I can put it where they also have 2 separate buildings with their Freshwater building and Saltwater building. Pier 59 and Pier 60 (both are connected) house the local / coldwater species, while the Ocean Pavilion (just a couple steps adjacent) houses all the tropical species, mainly originating from the 'Coral Triangle' in the Indo-Pacific.

With some big changes happening to the Piers, and a lot of species still moving over to the Ocean Pavilion, this thread will be updated pretty regularly. I will start off with the Piers since they're the original buildings, then move onto the OP (short for Ocean Pavilion).

Species in Green are species who are on exhibit, but not signed.
Species in Red are species who are signed, but not on exhibit.
Species who are some of the only on exhibit in either the US or globally will be in Blue since we have quite a few of those here.

Each space between a species indicates it's a new tank

Pacific Coral Reef Gallery | Now closed to the public, this space used to be the Aquarium's only tropical gallery till the Ocean Pavilion opened. The main reason is because a lot of the tanks are old and were starting to deteriorate. I'm hoping a majority of it is turned into a Jelly gallery since we could really use one to our benefit.

  • Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus)
  • Also some various soft corals
'Jelly Nursery' is the OP's Jelly exhibit. There is 1 large display tank and a polyp station and grow out rack that you're able to view to show visitors how a Jelly grows exactly through the various life stages
  • Currently we have no Jellies in here as I believe we're working on getting a new species for exhibit
'Animal Care Area' is a viewable portion of the behind-the-scenes area where guests can look into to see the logistical operations, onsite animal quarantine and holding, and live food culture. There are a few smaller holding systems and 1 large holding pool. Currently in here we have:
  • Zebra Shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) who is working on his target training skills. Currently there is no timeline for when he'll go back into 'The Reef'.
  • Along with various corals that are in the coral grow out tank

AND that wraps up the entire species list that covers all 3 buildings on the campus. For the Ocean Pavilion, there are species being moved over every week since I think we're only about 50% completed in terms of species who need to move in that are at the offsite facility. Most notably;
  • Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) (For 'The Reef', there is no timeline for when she's going in but it should be relatively soon, since she does have a species profile on the website)
  • Javanese Cownose Rays (Rhinoptera javanica) (For 'The Reef', they're not at the offsite facility yet but will hopefully be introduced this year)
  • Trio of Napolean Wrasses (Cheilinus undulatus) (For 'the Reef')
  • Banded Archerfishes (Toxotes jaculatrix) (For the Mangrove Lagoon)
  • Golden Sweepers (Parapriacanthus ransonneti) (For the 'Coral Canyon')
  • and much more
For Pier 59, the space that was once the "Pacific Coral Gallery" closed a little while ago (all the species were moved to the offsite facility. Animals that will move over to the OP will stay while everyone else will be moved to other Aquariums). It's because all of the tanks were old and starting to leak, so there's pretty much a clean slate in terms of what to do with that space (I'm really hoping for a Jelly gallery of local and coldwater species, plus make the big 25,000 Gallon Tank into a California Kelp Forest potentially). For Pier 60, it will undergo a massive renovation sometime within (hopefully) the next decade that will overhaul all the exhibits since they're pretty outdated (especially the Mammal exhibits). If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask

Ocean Pavilion news |

    • Purple Weedy Scorpionfishes (Rhinopias frondosa)

    • Also some various soft corals
This tank was drained and cleaned out this morning. Since it's so recent I'm not sure what the plan is but I'd expect something new to possibly move in within a day or two. Which means the Weedy Scorpionfishes are currently off exhibit, they're behind the scenes now.
  • Stocky Hawkfishes (Cirrhitus pinnulatus) were added to 'The Reef', though given their "small-ish size" (they still get 12") and reclusive nature, I'm not sure how often they'll be seen
  • The Giant Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea) that used to be in the old 'Pacific Coral Reef' Gallery has made it's debut once again in the 'Coral Canyon' side of the 'Archipelago'. I'm glad to see we kept this one in particular since it's a monster (size wise). Considering it's on the shallow end of the tank, I wouldn't be surprised if this was foreshadowing the addition of the Saddleback Clownfishes (Amphiprion polymnus) that are behind the scenes since this is the only other spot they'd fit in at this point.

  • Banggai Cardinalfishes (Pterapogon kauderni)
The Banggai's were actually moved to the 'Coral Canyon' side of the 'Archipelago' as well, you'll find them in the shallow end of the tank.

Pier 60 News: There are a couple baby Rock Soles (Lepidopsetta bilineata) in the Lumpsucker tank, I'd imagine once they grow larger they'll move to the dome. The sailfin sculpins that were in that tank are now behind the scenes.

OP news: A Group of Gold Spotted Rabbitfishes (Siganus punctatus) are now in 'The Reef', these were the same group who used to be in the large tank in the PCR Gallery. Glad to see some of the PCR species move over from their offsite enclosures.

The small tank in At home in the Ocean from my previous post is still under repairs as it turns out there's an issue with the tank itself.

OP news: The Long-nose Butterflyfishes (Forcipiger longirostris) that previously lived in the old PCR gallery have been moved over from BTS to the main exhibits in OP. Two are in the Garden Eel tank and the other two are with the Honeycomb Moray
  • A new batch of Spotted Lagoon Jellies are now on exhibit in the "Jelly Nursery" tank and smaller Kriesel's. The tanks sat empty for a few weeks while they were growing. They haven't developed their symbiotic algae yet so they're pretty blue and not golden brown
    • Yellow Leaf Scorpionfishes (Taenianotus triacanthus)
    • Banded Coral Shrimps (Stenopus hispidus)
This tank is also now empty and under repair. I have no idea why, and considering the other tank is still not up and running again, seems safe to say it'll be that way for a while unfortunately.
  • There is a new decently sized holding pool being setup in the Behind the Scenes area that is viewable to the public. I'm hoping this means a large group of fish (or large sized fish) are being moved over soon. I have no idea why it's been taking so long to move over species that have been at the ACC for almost three years at this point but hopefully it picks up pace again.

I've decided for ease of access to report species moves over on the official news thread for the aquarium here , and then on this thread I'll be doing updated iterations of the species lists for the campus since that's what the title implies. Should be easier for people to navigate hopefully. Speaking of that, it's been about a month since the last iteration so here is the newly updated list as of today, 8/3/25:

Starting with Pier 59:

WoWW;

  • Wolf Eels | Anarrhichthys ocellatus

Nigroris tang is huge! Those are very rare in captivity.
Wow I didn't realize until you pointed it out, that one is going to on my priority list this week. Seems like most of our species we still have from Hawaii are pretty rare (given that Hawaii has been closed for fish export for a few years now). Definitely going to try and photograph the Surgeonfish and Squirrelfish somehow when im in. Hopefully that Squirrelfish is outgoing but I'm pretty sure he'll just find a rock to hide in sadly

A surprising number of additions between the OP and the Piers were made this past week, and some species swaps happened between the exhibits, so now it's time for an updated list. Summer is usually when most of the collection for the Piers happens, and the second holding pool in the OP is up and running now, so expect this list to be updated again in a few weeks as new species are brought in / moved over.
I stopped by today since I haven't been in post San Diego trip, so this is up to date as of

I saw 2 fish in "the reef" exhibit that looked like speckled hinds (Epinephelus drummondhayi). They were hanging out by the small window that is near the mangrove lagoon exhibit. Probably 45 and 40 cm in length. Can anyone confirm? Seems weird to have something that predatory in there idk.

The closest thing i can think of that is in there that would look similar are the Spotted Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides), I haven't heard of any new additions being made to "the reef" lately, there was supposed to be at least 1 Queensland Grouper before for "the reef" that was planned, but the idea looks like it was canned and they were moved over to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma according to one of their articles apparently
