I grewup in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA during the 1950s till 1966. I visited at least 25 roadside zoos now extinct. During that period I worked parttime and fulltime at the now extinct St. Petersburg wild animal and reptile ranch which closed in 1959. I was the last keeper. Also I briefly worked at the Boyd Hill menagerie before I began my 35 year career in fish and wildlife conservation. I have visited 460 zoological facilities worldwide in my 85 years. I am an avid zoo visitor and have membership in both AZA and ZAA.
 
There's now a grand total of 31 zoos I've visited that have been permanently closed. In most cases it's been for the best, but occasionally a real gem has been shut down.

The only one I can think of is Reef HQ, in Townsville, which closed in 2021. It is planned to be rebuilt and reopened (with a name change back to the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, which it was previously called), but lacks funding and there has been no work done on it in years.

I have seen reports in the tourism industry that that work is well underway and there is a reopening date being talked about.

Edit: I looked up the reference, and the project is fully funded and due to reopen in 2029. Animals are either still on site or at another facility until the rebuilding is complete.

I posted this in that afforementioned thread, but I might as well say it again.
In the Barcelona area, I've visited two permanently closed zoos, and one that stopped being a zoo but still operates:
- Parc de Sobrestany: a drive-through safari park with an emphasis on deer and domestic animals, and there were also wallabies and some birds of prey in flight cages. I visited once with my family, and it closed in 2008 after having its zoo license revoked.
- Parc de les Aus: a very large avian collection, including various hornbills, macaws, waterfowl, southern cassowaries, and there were also dromedary camels, pond sliders and even chimpanzees. I visited at least three times, with family and on a school field trip. It closed in 2005 due to a court order on account of an inheritance dispute the park's owners had.
- Aqualeón; This started off as a drive-through safari park, but then it added a water park and a regular zoo section with birds of prey, parrot, reptile and even sea lion shows. I used to visit every summer, but every time it seemed like more and more animals were moved out. Eventually they lost all their animals, and they finally surrendered their last lions and bears in 2015. Now it's just another water park (and it's not even on the seafront, which makes it lose some advantages over Costa Caribe, Aquapolis and Marineland, among others).
I must confess... Quite often I have very vivid dreams that Aqualeon has brand new animal attractions! But then I wake up, and look at the website, and my disappointment returns...
