ZOO Plzeň Plzen zoo news

Article/interview with director Trávníček.
It mentions some future plans - elephants, of course, but also restaurant and "new big tropical pavillon" with sea aquarium and jellyfishes (on recently acquired land)
Ředitel zoo Jiří Trávníček: Sloni na Mži jsou jedním z mých velkých snů - Plzeňský deník
Are we talking about the greenfields areas on the other side of the road Pod Vinicerni (for the elephant project)?

Plus the old factory on the right side of the Zoo Entrance and as you approach the zoo from a walk into the greater park and along the Amphitheatre?

For the elephants, I assume, yes.
Tropical house however, shall be located in the west, somewhere near the bears (if I understood correctly) I assume we speak about some further future...

Somebody left a plastic box with a 75-cm long giant salamander in front of zoo staff entrance (near Amphitheatre) this week. Local police and state authorities got involved. The animal is in care of AkvaTera staff.

Illegal pet surrendered perhaps?

Yes, possibly an ex-pet. Another possibility maybe a survivor of illegal import of destined-as-food animal among our Chinese or Vietnamese minority. But that is plain speculation. Have never heard about giant salamanders kept in Czechia in private hands recently.

Maybe a bit provoking, but what's wrong with Czechia and (illegal) exotic pets and wildlife trade? Is there any reason, why it seems to be such a large problem here compared to other european countries?

Czechia used to have laissez-faire approach to private animal keeping (both domestics and wildlife) for decades. It is very popular hobby here since commie time, most households keep some pets. Only in recent years, private ownership of species like big cats, primates etc. got either prohibited or very strictly licenced, but still quite a lot of animals are hanging around. Also, our country is small and basicaly everybody knows everybody in same field, it feels like impossible to keep something secret for long, thus suspicious/illegal animal trade gets busted and published frequently if it happends.
