Zoochat (Tea)Cup 2025

They advanced by beating three far weaker zoos, but took heavy batterings to Wrocław and Prague which carry over whilst the three victories do not. This is another very heavy defeat, which means the most wins they can now get is two and their percentages are not looking too good. This result all but guarantees their elimination.

As a matter of fact, I've been mulling over whether it might be a good idea to drop that particular mechanic from the general concept I've taken from @CGSwans - partially to prevent things becoming *too* clear-cut and boring too quickly, partially to increase the general level of participation (as I suspect this will continue to peter out with alacrity if the end result is a foregone conclusion too rapidly), and partially to better facilitate the mechanic I have planned for the *next* stage of the Cup.

I agree that things don't look terribly promising for the Belgian pair even so!

Although participation was still a little lower than I would have liked, things seem to have picked up a little, with the Berlin / Chester match in particular providing plenty of interesting and enjoyable discussion:

League E - Chester vs Zoo Berlin - ASIA

Chester - 58/110 points - 52.727%
Zoo Berlin - 52/110 points - 47.273%

League F - Wroclaw vs Tierpark Berlin - TROPICAL FOREST

Wroclaw - 31/80 points - 38.750%
Tierpark Berlin - 49/80 points - 61.250%

I think the next two matches may continue this upwards trend, both because of the subject matter and merely an increase in the number of people who have noticed the Cup has started back up - hopefully I am correct!

European (Tea)Cup - League E - Paris Zoo & Menagerie vs Burgers

European (Tea)Cup - League F - Prague vs Leipzig

Enjoy, and we shall reconvene in a few days :)

KDMA has the largest ape collection and with Amahoro probably the most exclusive individual of any European zoo right now. Therefore i would say tropical forests, Africa and primates are categories where they are a serious opponent for every other collection. For sure they have (way) more to offer than the apes in these categories.

(song)birds certainly also.

Question, because I'm curious - are the leagues "equal" in terms of categories this time around or are there going to be "mix-ups", if you will? So, like, since League E has already had "Water", "Asia" and "Grasslands & Deserts", does that mean League F is guaranteed to have them too, or is it just that they might have them (so like, Water appears in one but not the other)?

I have my reason for asking this otherwise random question.

I have my reason for asking this otherwise random question.

The categories for each are basically the full roster of 15, minus those already played within the "carried over" matches (Chester v Paris, Chester v Vienna, Paris v Vienna, Berlin v Burgers, Berlin v Beauval, Burgers v Beauval for League E, and Prague v Wroclaw, Prague v Ant/Planck, Wroclaw v Ant/Planck, Tierpark v Leipzig, Tierpark v Stuttgart, Leipzig v Stuttgart for League F).

As such, the nine matches of League E won't have exactly the same categories as the nine matches of League F, although there is enough overlap in the carried-over matches that three of the original categories will not occur in either League.

I think I get it. In that case, I believe I've figured out which categories appear in which league, and which three have been locked out (it's Hoofstock, Primates and Misc. Mammals, right?).

To be fair, how far a zoo progresses in this tournament is really down to luck of the draw, as it is for many tournaments. Even if Ant/Planck were allowed rematches with Wroclaw and Prague, can we really confidently say they'd definitely make it through? Wroclaw, maybe, but Prague is probably one of the heavy favourites for the competition right now, so that's a big ask.

Equally unfortunately and unluckily, having "the largest ape collection" in Europe isn't going to mean anything when "Primates" is locked out of this round, at least from what I understood.

A satisfyingly active pair of matches, with the Paris vs Burgers match in particular seeing a massive flurry of activity in the final 18 hours or so, and a correspondingly high level of quality discussion and debate!

League E - Paris vs Burgers - GRASSLANDS AND DESERTS

Paris - 56/120 points - 46.667%
Burgers - 64/120 points - 53.333%

League F - Prague vs Leipzig - BIRDS

Prague - 92/115 points - 80.000%
Leipzig - 23/115 points - 20.000%

I rather hope that the next pair of matches are equally active, if not moreso :D

European (Tea)Cup - League E - Chester vs Burgers

European (Tea)Cup - League F - Wroclaw vs Leipzig

But most importantly of all, enjoy!

Since we're a third of the way through Round 2, I thought I'd have a look to see where we stand right now. Purely based on wins right now because I don't have the patience to sit through percentages.

LEAGUE E
  • Burgers (2 wins)
  • Beauval (2 wins)
  • Chester (2 wins)
  • Paris (1 win)
  • Vienna (1 win)
  • Zoo Berlin (1 win)
Counting their round one victories, Burgers does have a priority spot over Beauval for its own victory. Right now, it's very hard to say which zoo is going to make it through to the next round, but back-to-back losses with one match-up left makes it seem like Paris' unexpected run may well be coming to an end.

LEAGUE F
  • Tierpark Berlin (4 wins)
  • Prague (3 wins)
  • Wroclaw (1 win)
  • Stuttgart (1 win)
  • Antwerp & Planckendael (0 wins)
  • Leipzig (0 wins)
By contrast, this one feels very clear cut at the top. T-Berlin is steamrolling away with victory and is practically confirmed a spot in the next round... although it needs to be careful, since Prague is just around the corner.

You forget that I've already indicated that (for various reasons) all match scores from the first round are being carried-over :D:p so the current rankings are a bit different to your above list!

Granted the below is rather unbalanced given multiple collections (Vienna and Stuttgart) haven't had any matches as of yet this round, but for the record:

LEAGUE E

Burgers (5 wins)
Chester (5 wins)
Zoo Berlin (4 wins)
Vienna (4 wins)
Beauval (4 wins)
Paris (3 wins)

LEAGUE F

Tierpark Berlin (7 wins)
Prague (6 wins)
Wroclaw (4 wins)
Stuttgart (4 wins)
KDMA (3 wins)
Leipzig (3 wins)

Oh, wait, you mean ALL the match scores? I didn't forget, I thought you just meant the ones where they faced each other and ignored the rest.

This is what I get for trying to be clever. XD

What were the 'various reasons '?

Per my above post where I originally mentioned the slight change to the game mechanics:

partially to prevent things becoming *too* clear-cut and boring too quickly, partially to increase the general level of participation (as I suspect this will continue to peter out with alacrity if the end result is a foregone conclusion too rapidly), and partially to better facilitate the mechanic I have planned for the *next* stage of the Cup.

Per my above post where I originally mentioned the slight change to the game mechanics:
If anything group E is far more of a forgone conclusion under the change to the rules and is also a distinct advantage to those who were in a far weaker first round group. It also means group F is even more finalised than it was before!
Anyway it's only for fun so we don't need to have a massive debate about it

Not particularly - five out of six competitors have a chance to progress, as opposed to the three out of six if the rules remained "only wins/losses against direct competitors count". Similarly, four out of six competitors in group F have a shot at progression at present, rather than the three out of six under the initial plan.

Considering the fact that if the rules had remained static we'd already have the six collections in League G locked-in, and the remaining matches in E and F would more or less be formalities, this is definitely the more enjoyable route!

Anyway it's only for fun so we don't need to have a massive debate about it

Indeed - its pretty much the principle of quia ego sic dico after all :p:D

A pair of pretty conclusive matches, although a little quieter than I would have liked:

League E - Chester vs Burgers - AFRICA

Chester - 63/100 points - 63.000%
Burgers - 37/100 points - 37.000%

League F - Wroclaw vs Leipzig - ECTOTHERMS

Wroclaw - 67/90 points - 74.444%
Leipzig - 23/90 points - 25.556%

The next two matches launched last night and are already well underway:

European (Tea)Cup - League E - Vienna vs Zoo Berlin

European (Tea)Cup - League F - Wroclaw vs Stuttgart

Hopefully you will enjoy them and plenty of discussion and voting shall ensue!

Two fairly conclusive matches, although both quieter than I hoped and expected - it is perhaps a good sign that both enjoyed a late-game increase in participation, however.

League E - Vienna vs Zoo Berlin - CARNIVORES

Vienna - 50/115 points - 43.478%
Zoo Berlin - 65/115 points - 56.522%

League F - Wroclaw vs Stuttgart - LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

Wroclaw - 41/95 points - 43.158%
Stuttgart - 54/95 points - 56.842%

The next two matches have a lot of potential to be active and vibrant debates:

European (Tea)Cup - League E - Chester vs Beauval

European (Tea)Cup - League F - Antwerp and Planckendael vs Stuttgart

I hope that everyone continues to enjoy the Cup, by the by!
