Asian Elephants in Europe 2025

Very sad news to hear - EEHV obviously can strike quite quickly and in most cases, there isn't much that can be done once it's progressing into the later stages. .

EEHV does NOT strike quickly! That is a misumderstanding. The virus can be found in the blood 7-10 days before the calf gets visibly sick. In this period, there is already a deadly war going on in the inside while the calf looks healthy on the outside. To treat EEHV effectivly, you need to catch it early, BEFORE the calf seems unwell. THEN you have a chance. Otherwise not. It seems München did not screen Otto weekly for the virus, they did not catch it early…. And it seems they did not treat him preventivly with plasma transfusions (as some US zoos have done with sucess lately). I guess they hoped the vaccine would be enough… it may not be as effective as we all hope, or maybe he did not get the second dose yet?

According to a source from EleWiki, as suspected Po chin is most likely the sire of Farina's new calf, so it would seem that the park officials assumed Ta Wan was the sire, as he was with the cows for a longer period of time than Po chin. I wouldn't take it as 100% fact though. The best thing to do is dna test, and sort this whole mess out.

"On Saturday morning, June 14, 2025, at 9:28 a.m., her sister Farina gave birth to a bull calf. Her heavily pregnant sister Soraya can also be seen in the video. Po Chin is presumably the father.

Apparently, only a few keepers knew that Po Chin successfully covered Farina in 2023 in addition to Soraya
."

Which is why I stated not to take it 100% fact, it's more than likely that Ta Wan is actually the sire.

And here I am, wondering why the identity of the suspected father was even announced in the first place. DNA testing to confirm parentage before making any statements sounds like common sense to me IMHO.

Po Chin may not even share a fence with the females. And the fences/barriers used for elephant paddocks are VERY different from fences used for horses.

This paternity discussion is rather unnecessary. It's understandable that everyone is disappointed that the calf is inbred but unless Paira Daiza says otherwise, it should be assumed that Ta Wan is the father.

True. Why should Pairi Daiza release a statetement that is negative for them if they weren't sure about it? They could have stayed silent about it and the public would have assumed that somebody else was the father.

Furthermore, it's not difficult to assess the sires of calves when you account for the relatively short cycles - if Po Chin wasn't in with the herd when the calves were conceived, it's easy to rule him out.

On the flip side, if Ta Wan was seen mating the cows and now pregnancies (and calves) have resulted, I think they'd be quite confident in knowing who the sire is!

I think Elewiki is not trustable source. It also wrote Shahrukh from Szeged moves to Rotterdam. It was rumour from Elewiki and it was not true. I asked directly the Szeged Zoo in email and they said they didn't have any plan to send SR. to another zoo. And it was not the only case when I read there false information. Since then I don't read that website. Every people can edit Elewiki and add the info he/she thinks to true.

I just saw that Maxim at Ostrava has had no offspring since his stay at Le Pal for some reason. That's probably why Ostrava hasn't had a new calf in nearly 10 years now. I hope it doesn't have a breeding ban.
