Houston Zoo Houston Zoo News 2025

Considering that Taipei and Houston are both sister cities, is it possible that their respective zoos may collaborate on bringing in America’s first ever Chinese Pangolins?!

Of course, I realize basing this speculation around a mural made by a Taiwanese artist might be over ambitious; but after all, one can only imagine. ;)

I am glad the zoo is putting in a mural on zoo grounds. It was something I was hoping for. The zoo does work in Borneo with the Pangolin being a part of it. Chinese Pangolin would be nice for sure.

Are new animal exhibits going to added to natural encounters building? Where are the all the species including the sloths marmosets and sakis going to go?
As far as I know, the saki monkeys are being transferred to the former DeBrazza's Monkey enclosure once the baby is large enough to not fit through the mesh. Tamandua is already at the Pantanal and only ever shares exhibit with the tamarins, good luck seeing her though. Indian star tortoise, savanna monitor, leopard tortoise are all behind the scenes. And everything else is getting transferred away. There are currently no plans to do anything with the NA building at the moment.

really sad to hear that species like the Pygmy Marmosets, Damaraland Mole Rats, Australian Lungfish, and Prehensile-Tailed Porcupines won't be returning...Hoping that the Savannah Monitor can eventually get put on display in the Reptile House, the Star and Leopard Tortoises could hopefully take over the former Radiated Tortoise/Galapagos Tortoise Habitat.

I am gonna miss seeing the lungfish. I felt like it’s time at Houston was really short.

Surprised the Asian small-clawed otters aren't going to be kept in some fashion, they seemed like a shoo-in for Asian Islands. I suppose nothing on the table is the same as it was before, of course, with new leadership.
I totally forgot about them!

They'll probably come back if they still plan to turn the Wortham World of Primates area into a Southeastern Asian Islands area. It prob makes more sense keeping them over North American River Otters as I'm unsure if their exhibit at the children's zoo is appropriate long term. Most AZA zoos keep only one or two otter species afaik

They were the most heartbreaking to say goodbye to personally, I loved those little troublemakers. Sadly, there just isn't an appropriate behind the scenes area for them. It's not like the species would be particularly difficult to get back once Asian Islands comes around anyways so, it's for the best they get to be sent elsewhere to enjoy a better exhibit than what they had in NA. Some grass would be nice, maybe some sun soon.

I wonder why the zoo phased out the DeBrazza's Monkeys and what happened to them @TheImmigrant1
