I am so happy about the first bearded vulture chick in an Iberian zoo! Jerez de la Frontera has always been at the forearont of native species ex situ conservation breeding with - if possible - an in situ project to restore the species. 2021 and 4 years on ... it has been well worth the wait!!!

Birth news:
- Another first-ever hatch at an Iberian zoo happened at Jerez recently, as two Lanner falcons (Falco biarmicus) hatched at the zoo!
This species went extinct as a breeding bird in Spain at the beginning of the last century, and the zoo is partaking in proyects to recover this species in the country.

News:
A new farm area is set to be built at Zoobotánico de Jerez
. To this end, the local government board approved a budget of more than 22,500 euros at the end of May for the adaptation works necessary for the implementation of this infrastructure.
The works, whose completion period is around three months, are expected to begin imminently. The new space will be built on land that occupies just over 600 square meters. The objective of this municipal initiative is, as stated in the project, “to expand the educational aspect and awareness of animal life”, and therefore, This new space dedicated to domestic animals is proposed. However, the concept does not correspond exactly to the definition of a traditional 'farm', "being more appropriate the installation of domestic animals and those related to humans."
The launch of this farm area and educational area will take place in the existing area where the vicuñas (former Przewalski's horses) were located and in an adjacent area where the bonsai collection is housed. Both the animals and the bonsai will be moved to another area within zoo grounds.
Individuals of Andalusian blue chicken, Andalusian turkey, Andalusian donkey, Grazalema merino sheep, Payoya goat and rabbits could be incorporated. The area would also house some exotic species such as tortoises, iguanas, parrots, and other reptiles, animals that arrive to the zoo as decommissioned or donated exotic pets.

- The new farm area was inaugurated yesterday, and it has been named "Granja de Animales Domésticos Andaluces Amenazados" (Farm of endangered andalusian domestic animals). The new domestic breeds that are now housed at the zoo are the Andalusian blue chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), Andalusian donkey (Equus africanus asinus), Payoya goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) and Grazalema merino sheep (Ovis orientalis aries).
