I mean, they deserved it. Exhibit was very bad and violated the AZA guidelines of 3+ elephants for years under the guise their existing elephant hated others then when the legal pressure came down “oh but she likes these other two, look!”

Sometimes it’s okay to set minimum standards and to always push to be better than the minimum.

And sometimes these activists can have valid points when criticizing zoos despite how much most of their arguments irk us

San Antonio Zoo full well knew all the issues with their old elephant exhibit. They did purposefully manage their elderly elephants with the greatest animal husbandry and end of life care at the only site that really appreciated their needs.

BTW: the AW Brigades are sooo misguided ... and honestly do not have a frigging clue about the needs of elephants in captivity nor do they contribute in any substantive manner to in situ conservation of elephants. If you do not put your money were your mouths are you are part of the problem. I wish AW Brigades would go the way of the Dinosaurs...., they are so agitprop fundamentalists...., it is beyond any colour phases...

I don’t agree. As I said, many times we need to call out lesser performers for certain areas and demand they step up to the standards of their peers leaders or leave the practice.

San Antonio’s elephant enclosure (so far) this century did not meet modern standards. The caretakers I’m sure did a great job, but they did not have the resources to meet what was necessary of them. And that’s a shame.

No, this person has a very valid and reasonable point. If anything, I'd say they're being very balanced and generous with their opinion in pointing out that the care was good regardless of the enclosure itself. They are not clogging up the thread by having this discussion - you just don't like what they're saying and you're being dismissive in the face of disagreement.

Kind of seems odd that they make three separate announcements a month apart from each other about acquiring three different gorillas all from the exact same facility rather than announcing all three of them are coming at once.
 
 
 
If the Asian Elephants come back, they should make a new Asian exhibit area along with the new Asian Elephant exhibit with new exhibits for the Gibbons, Otters, Francois Langurs, Komodo Dragons, Reticulated Python, Tigers, Clouded Leopards, Fishing Cats, Tree Shrews, Prevost's Squirrels, Gharials, Babirusas, and Flying Foxes, they should also have new species in the Asian area like Orangutans, Sloth Bears, and possibly even Red Pandas

as for what other zoos can copy, its up to San Antonio Zoo themselves to share that info, their bird team is well known for breeding difficult species such as palm cockatoo.
