Introducing our first baby Hyena…MILELE.

Milele is of East African origin and is used occasionally as a unisex name in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and Tanzania. It is derived from the Swahili word for "always, forever" and "eternity". Baby has been named this with hopes of these viable genetics paving a bright future for the breeding program of spotted hyena!

This beautiful baby is Malika’s first ever baby! This amazing mother was imported from Africa as a new genetic to Australia! A few years later She fell in love with Makhali and …Milele was born!

For those asking about Milele’s sex … hyena are a little different to every day mammals where both males & females all appear as males - with females having sudo-male genitalia. So when Milele is due for vaccinating, a blood test will be taken to confirm health and sex of our cheeky little cub!
 
Altina welcomes first Waterbuck birth in a few years:

It’s nice to see a birth of this species, which has regionally dwindled in numbers in recent years.

This beautiful baby was born only a couple days ago! Our first baby waterbuck born in a few years and is already walking around with mum and showing off on tour!

This would be a timely import by regional holders before these also fade away!
 
Two African wild dog pups have been born:

Congrats to Altina on this exciting achievement!

A rare breeding pack of African Cape Hunting Dogs have now improved the population adding 2 amazing puppies to the conservation program!

This Altina pack are first time parents! “Pari” (our Altina born female) was introduced to her mate as an alpha female, just over 3 years ago! She bonded quickly, with her Alpha male “Seimon” as her mate (imported from Czech Republic). Despite their obvious love for each other they never really decided to “settle down and raise a family” until now!

The 2 Puppies are the 2nd litter born in the country, that represent the new imported bloodline with their 4 male cousins, also born at Altina in 2023. These two pups are starting to emerge from their dens during the day when the weather is warmer. If you are lucky you may spot them playing in the sun.

One of the African wild dog pups confirmed as a female:

An update from socials tonight that one of the pups is female. The gender of the other pup has yet to be revealed.

Altina have done incredible work with this species (and many other species). Their progress astounds me.

These pups are the fourth generation of their family to live at Altina Wildlife Park:

- Travis and Zahra were the original breeding pair
- Their daughter Akida was born 2013
- Akida produced Pari in 2018
- Pari produced twins in 2025

New female white lion:

@Smaggledagle previously reported that Altina Wildlife Park received a female white lion, which I can now confirm is Nala from Hunter Valley Zoo. She’s housed with Holden; with Altina’s lions grouped as follows:

Alligator/crocodile phase out:

We at Altina have made the Agonising decision to transfer our magnificent Alligator “Matong”, Freshwater Crocodiles “Baru and Collie” and Saltwater Crocodile “Dundee”, to other Wildlife Parks within the next week or so.

Those of you who know the Altina Wildlife Park Family would know that we aspire to go above and beyond for all our animals. We feel that our Crocodilians could be housed in more spacious surroundings (even though our facilities currently meet Government Standards) and have conducted investigations on the resources required for the upgrade.

Unfortunately, the resources associated with the upgrades are not feasible financially or within reasonable time constrains. Temporarily displacing our beautiful Crocodilians for the required length of time to complete the upgrade (in our opinion), would detrimentally impact on their overall Welfare. Therefore, to be true to our Crocodiles and Alligator we have resolved to place them within facilities where space is more expansive.

We at Altina made the Agonising decision to transfer our magnificent Alligator “Matong”, Freshwater Crocodiles “Baru and Collie” and Saltwater Crocodile “Dundee”, to other Wildlife Parks over the last couple days.

It was very difficult waving goodbye to these animals that have called Altina home since 2007. We appreciate your support and understanding during this time.
 
Maned wolf update:

The pups have been sexed as 1.1 and were born to a female named Mirabel:

A little peek into Mirabel’s Den Box our first time mummy Maned Wolf has 2 chunky little pups staggering around and starting to play!

It still amazes us how Maned Wolf pups are born black with floppy ears! If you zoom in you may see a touch of orange/red hair starting to grow behind their ears!

Super excited for another success and more happy animals proving they belong in the and beginning us all not to give up on trying to save us!

shhh Mirabel doesn’t know that we peeked under their tails and can tell you we have a pigeon pair! 1 boy & 1 girl
 
Details on Maned wolf pups:

The 1.1 pups were born 05/07/2025 to Cisco and Mirabel, with the father Cisco born 2019 at Altina Wildlife Park.

Male pup:

This little boy though only 4 weeks old is already showing his “tough man” personality growling at the keepers when they peek in his den box and even occasionally his mother as she comes back in after breakfast.

Female pup:

This little girl is a shy but a sweet little soul with a cute little voice especially when playing with her brother. Weighing only 1.63kg she has a lot of growing to do!

The blessing of a pigeon pair is just amazing and this little girl is also the youngest female Maned Wolf in Australasia!
