Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2025

It‘s not that easy Kevin. Ta Wan sired these calves at age 6. And it is often much better to keep young bulls in their natal groups longer. Some young bulls are so self-confident and independent that they are ready to move to a bull group earlier, but many are not. It‘s far less traumatic for the young bulls and their mothers alike to wait with the transfer to a bull group until the boys are independent enough. And most young bulls are NOT mature enough to sire babies at age 6. That‘s actually a HUGE exeption.

I often think the constraints of zoo management mean that the young of some slow maturing species- elephants, rhinos, gorillas etc, sometimes get removed from their natal situations at too early a time and far earlier than is natural, which must cause stress to both the mother and offspring in particular and others in a group too. Rhinos, that still accompany their mothers long after they are weaned, until five or six in the wild are (sometimes) removed at say, two years old. Gorilla males occassionally as early as five or six, when they might not leave in the wild until double that age. I think six is way too young for an elephant too as I'm sure they don't move into independent living at that age in the wild. Obviously such moves do sometimes become necessary in zoos though for various circumstances.

I didn't know that the birds of prey show was still on. I thought their space had been replaced by a horse paddock.

They don't do bird shows in the arena anymore, but they still train a variety of birds for free-flight demonstrations and fly them in different locations in the park at different times. I have seen them flying a mix of storks, ibises, parrots and vultures in the area between the entrance and the aquarium.

A Linnaeus' two-toed sloth was born.

Also in this post they mention that their foundation supports 48 projects. They seem to have a very different conservation strategy than most other zoos, and instead of focusing on a few big projects they do a little bit of everything. On a different article I found that the total sum of money is 2 million euros that has been donated to these projects in 2024.

On zooflits.nl they talk about this being a unique sub species and being different subspecies as the snub-nosed monkeys in Beauval. I thought both were golden snub-nosed monkeys

They are, although different subspecies. The Golden snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus roxellana has three subspecies, Beauvaul has the subspecies R. r. roxellana or the Moupin golden snub-nosed monkey, while Pairi Daiza has the subspecies R. r. qinlingensis or the Qinling golden snub-nosed monkey.

It's official, the golden snub-nosed monkeys have discovered their outdoor exibith for the first time and can be seen by the public.

Work on the gibbons in the Asian elephant exibith is progressing rapidly. Does anyone know if this mix has been attempted before? In any case, seeing the gibbons hovering above the elephants should be something unique.

I have seen one or two examples of gibbons being kept above a rhinoceros exhibit in the gallery, but I haven't seen any with elephants before.

Very exciting news :D
Drills have been added on ZTL of Pairi Daiza. At first I thought it was a mistake, but the info mentions that they are behind the scenes and have 4 males. These will go to the Sanctuary, right? I can't think of any other place in the zoo where these would go. Likely somewhere else more info can be found on this, but I am currently on vacation, so I can't do any research rn.

This is an amazing and very unexpected addition to Pairi Daiza! They always had a quite strong primate collection and this is going to make it even more amazing!:p

Zoo Sóstó has gibbons in the indoor elephant exhibit, and Denver Zoo has gibbon islands positioned in front of one of their rotational elephant/rhino yards!
