Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2025

Someone from their Ape staff spent time in Frankfurt to study the same mix in advance of them doing it. Dublin have the same mix too . I don't anticipate any problem. But I am interested in just how big the Gorillla/Mangabey area really is.

In terms of the mix, while it makes for good viewing etc, does it benefit both species? I am guessing there must be evidence from Frankfurt that it is a form of enrichment but I wondered if there was anything interesting behind it?

In Europe one or two zoos have Black Mangabey with Gorillas and the younger Mangabeys sometimes play with the younger gorillas. They seem very relaxed and familiar with each other. Perhaps less or no interaction by the adults though. Not sure how it works at Frankfurt but they have a group of eight Mangabey so presumably breeding them also.

Occasionally with gorilla/monkey mixes things go wrong and a monkey gets killed. It's always a possibility.

Anyone knows when the new tropical house will be open to the public?

Nothing has been announced yet, although the Members’ preview was due to take place last Wednesday, 14th.

They were working on it on Sunday, so it must be due to open soon. I’m guessing they’ll want it open for half term which starts next Saturday.

I visited today and the “Tropical House” was open. Found it quite underwhelming, two fairly small enclosures with little cover for radiated tortoise and Javan mouse deer (no show), with free ranging birds (can only recall seeing Victoria crowned pigeon but other species were signed). I would be surprised if anyone ever sees the mouse deer. 3(?) vivariums at the end signed for, if my memory serves me correctly, pachnoda beetles, electric blue day gecko and Henkels leaf tailed gecko (however they were empty and not yet stocked). I think with the size of the tunnel they should have kept it as a butterfly house. Very hot in there.

Visited today, I second a lot of the points about the tropical house, especially the temperature as I’ve never been in any indoor exhibit as hot as that

the reason the mouse deer aren’t visible is because they aren’t in yet apparently there moving in next week which I presume will be the hard launch of the tropical house

it does seem like you see more the quieter it is in there as I went twice and the second time it was us and the volenteer and managed to see a lot more

I am glad at what they’ve added and while I wish there were more endangered bird species, the ones they’ve added are bright and colourful (I am a sucker for a colourful bird)

everything else seems quite normal, saw the ostrich finally sat on the eggs which was unusual and the second time in a row where I’ve caught the giraffe having training, before being hoof checks and today their weight being taken

I am hopeful that we get more arrivals before the African Forest opening as it would be nice to see the zoo fill out a bit more

Anyone know when the tropical house is due to open? Went yesterday and said coming soon out front.
One of the zebras was also dragging their back left leg

It might’ve been closed as the mouse deer were due to move in next. Week but may have moved in this weekend and they might be giving them time to adjustt

Visited today

The tropical house was closed again, I have a feeling that maybe it will open after half term in order not to spook the new residents specifically the mouse deer

The ostrich were seperated today, I didn’t see Mary the ostrich but the house doors were shut and drummer the ostrich was on the nest (then was off them when I came back :( )

When I visited last week, a staff member at the entrance kiosk told me it was closed as they had issues with the temperature control?

The ostrich are moving next to the zebra.

On the zoo website it appears the cheetah swap with whipsnade has happened, they arrived quite recently it seems

Two males - named Boma and Nasir. Unless they've been re-named, it doesn't seem they've come from Whipsnade.

The tropical house has still not opened as they cannot control the temperature effectively, yet. It will probably open at summers end.
I looked hard and long again at the new gorilla enclosure and I can see that it is bigger than Clifton, but I can’t see how it is 4.5 times bigger? Perhaps it will be much clearer when we have better access? However, if they keep the current trees & foliage as it is, it will be amazing to see the troop use it.

.
Does it say why?
Is it just a single sheet polytunnel, which cooks in the summer sun?
Modern heat-exchanger units cool as well as heat - but presumably need some sort of insulation to make doing either affordable.

How far off completion do you think the gorilla enclosure is now? I know that as it stands they still won't even be on show for some months after they do eventually move, not till next year so they say. If the actual move doesn't happen soon, in another couple of months it will be a full three years(!) that they have lived offshow at the old zoo site. A very odd situation, I have never heard of anything comparable!

I also wonder how long it will be before the outcome of the Judicial Review about the sale of old zoo is made public. This ongoing situation just seems to drag on and in the meantime it must be seriously hampering developments at the Project.
