Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo and Aquarium News 2025

Can you say if / how many new species there will be?
What I saw didn't indicate new species, but that's not to say there won't be. It was a rough plan that I think was still in the beginning stages. It looked like there's a general layout down but a lot is still undecided in terms of species and details

I went to the zoo today and here are some updates the one big one is the old bearcat exhibit in the nocturnal house has been filled in and bedding was added I looked for a couple of minutes i didn't see anything the sign still says bearcat but no climbing structure also they was a African Grey parrot in the aviary in the Congo not the African grey parrot exhibit along with that the tortoises have been moved to the Congo aviary from the Asia quest for the summer

What is the current line up in the Congo aviary? What turtle and bird species?

Their last exhibit binturong (I believe they have at least have one ambassador binturong left) passed away earlier this year. I was hoping they would get another one, but perhaps they are going to put a new species in the area. I would definitely miss seeing a binturong when going in that building.

It will probably be open in a couple of weeks but I think the zoo will demolish the old one
I would anticipate mid-July for the aviaries. Neither look close to completion and then they'll need likely a week or more to let the birds settle in. They won't do anything to the old aviary other than close it/block off the path until groundbreaking on Phase 2 (likely later next year)

New Did they rename the Songbird Aviary again? The sign says Songbird Conservation Center, but they just dedicated it and renamed it like a couple years ago lol
It does indeed seem like the Aviary was renamed again! Likely a different donor this time.

Are you positive they were the Burmese Mountain Tortoises and not the Aldabras that usually occupy the congo Aviary? It would be strange for the Asian tortoises to be moved to the African avairy when they usually go to the Asian Quest avairy.

When i last went to Asia Quest in May, there were tortoises in the Bat enclosure, I think they may have been Radiated and Aldabra, why are they in there when both those species have their own exhibits? And are there Aldabra's in the congo aviary? I didn't see any in there in May

There are two aldabras by the carousel but those are the older ones the young ones are in the Congo aviary

The tortoises in the bat enclosure are, as far as I am aware, Burmese Mountain Tortoises. They may have added Radiated as well but they definitely have at least have Burmese, and have for years. The Burmese stay indoors for the winter and then go to the Asia Quest aviary for the summer. AFAIK the young Aldabras have an indoor space in the Congo during the winter, I've never seen them in with the bats.

The sad thing is after visiting the past couple of days, I look at all the mature trees in the old aviary that give the birds plenty of privacy and they won't have that in the new aviary. It would be nice if they were able to transport some of those trees into the new exhibit.

Another note to add is they were working inside the black bear exhibit the last two days. The American black bear had access to her cave area and inside holding.

This was one of my biggest issues with what I saw of the aviary as well. I understand they likely are giving younger trees the oppertunity to grow over time, but it definitely doesn't have the secluded, private feel the old aviary does. It literally being the first exhibit in when you walk into the region is a major change as well, and I wonder if it will have any impact on the birds themselves.
