North American Sumatran Tiger Population

Australian import update:

An update that in addition to the male Ketambe, Adelaide Zoo have confirmed they will also be exporting a female to the US (littermate of Ketambe).

No further details available at this stage, including the date of transfer or receiving zoos; though it was previously reported by @Cheetah that Zoo Miami would be importing a male from Adelaide.

Details of tigers are as follows:

1.0 Ketambe (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Susu (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah

These cubs (and recent Australian import, Mawar) descend from three wild born founders previously unrepresented within the US population. These founders are the ancestors of Kaitlyn (2007), who was imported into Australia in 2008 and has produced eight cubs including Clarence (sire of Mawar) and Delilah (dam of Ketambe and Susu). Clarence and Delilah are half-siblings (sired by Australian bred males Ramalon and Juma).

I do wonder what the plan is with Ketambe specifically. Zoo Miami currently have a post reproductive tigress, so it doesn't seem like there's any immediate breeding plans.

If not, Susu will hopefully provide the North American population with the opportunity to utilise the genetics sooner rather than later. It'll be interesting to see where she ends up; there's a lot of vacant places within the population at the moment.

In addition to their ageing tigress Leeloo (2011), Zoo Miami have her daughter, Lani (2023). If Ketambe (2022) does indeed go there, I’d assume she would be his intended mate. Ketambe won’t be sexually mature until at least next year and while tigresses as old as 15 years have been paired for breeding in the past, I’d consider her daughter the more likely option.

In contrast to Mawar, who is already six years old: Ketmabe and Marni turn three in December, so even accounting for what will surely be several months (even a year) before the transfer occurs, they’ll be entering the population with maximum potential to contribute to the North American breeding programme.

I believe Lani is/was destined for Texas, but plans may have changed. It's possible Miami also intend to bring a new female in from another facility to pair with Ketambe. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Hello everyone, I am new to ZooChat, glad to be here. I was formerly an Interpretive Volunteer at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for Sumatran Tigers, however I have not volunteered for the last few years. I am going through the Sumatran Tigers who have resided at the Park, since Delta and Utan. I am creating a family tree of the Tigers but am lacking some information on a few of the Tigers. Does anyone know the current location of Debbie (Sister to Nelson and Cathy)? She was born Jan 28, 2016. I do not know if her name might have been changed, as sometimes happens. Thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome to ZooChat!

Debbie’s name was indeed changed, she is now known as “Diburu” and she is currently located at the Dallas Zoo.
