Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton Zoo News 2025

We also saw the latest Binturong baby, oh my! So active and very playfull.
I saw the little one this week too!

I've been a few times recently and wondered if the Malayan tiger still gets access to the full enclosure, as it always seems to be the white tiger's gate that is open?

These cool creatures are Tawny Frogmouths, nocturnal birds native to Australia. They spend their days camouflaged as branches, and their nights hunting for insects and small mammals, as well as frogs, reptiles, and birds. These are not the only species to have already made their way down to fraggle rock... it won't be hard to mask who's arrived, but if you can't make it this week, watch this space, the announcement is coming soon ...(and there's even more to come!) | Lakeland Wildlife Oasis

Visited hamerton today for the first time ever, and i must say i was very impressed. First i’ll get the negatives out of the way, but there’s only 3, There’s a small section next to the raccoons that looked like and old enclosure but is all overgrown and doesn’t look the best. The area where the cranes, vultures and marabou storks are was looking a bit more tired tan the rest of the zoo and could do with some updates. And finally the only negative enclosure wise was the brown hyenas, now it can’t be that bad because they have bred multiple times so must be content, but the main hyena enclosure is very small, with just some bark chipping and a couple of platforms. Obviously i guess there okay with that but i was surprised they didn’t have a bigger space because i couldn’t believe how big the hyena was!

But the positives, there’s so many. The main being the huge variety of rare and unusual species. Wombats, golden possums, syrian bears, brown hyenas, corsac fox, jackal, aardwolf, sumartran civets, the variety of crane species. Just so many rare and unusual animals.

Even though they were in their dens, the were awake however, seeing the wombats was a treat. The most adorable animal i’ve ever seen personally. The syrian bears were also a great, some playing in the large pool and some out exploring in the grasses.

Behind the syrian bears are newer enclosures that have been built for the surplus number of brown hyenas and cheetah that the zoo have. This brown hyena enclosure was much better.

The white bengal tiger is beautiful. I’d never seen a white one before.

The zoo are currently building a large enclosure for japanese snow monkeys which is in between the white tiger and the syrian bears. Also behind the syrian bears they have lots of expansion space, but after reading the guidebook it seems like they really want more expansion and more species but the lack of funding and only receiving money from visitors and donators is what is holding them back.

The only animals i didn’t see were the binturong, striped skunk, ringtail, echidna, and a couple of the possum species.

I was reccomended to visit hamerton and johnson’s of old hurst in the same day but i’m glad i didn’t because we arrived at hamerton at 10.30 and didn’t leave until closing at 5pm. Hamerton is a full day!

Top tip: The zoo was extremely quiet after 4.00pm and in the last hour of the day we did a quick run around to see animals we hadn’t seen the first time. The cassowary, serval, maned wolf, brown hyena, southern aardwolf, grison and bat eared fox were not out earlier in the day but all were clearly visible in the last hour. Stay until the end to see more species definitely.

I could definitely tell tlc projects were ongoing, and i hope that continues around some of the very few tired looking areas. They definitely need another toilet block as the only ones are in the far right hand side of the zoo near the marmosets and lemurs. Some in the grassy area near the farm animals would be a good space for another needed toilet facility.

I will definitely be visiting again soon!

That also semt to be the case on my visit today. However i think the malayan tiger may have had access to the enclosure adjacent to the jackal and dingo

The hatch to that enclosure has been up on my visits, but there are no signs to say it's in use.
Does anyone know what is going into the Giant anteater enclosure now the cheetah are out?

There was nothing in the former anteater enclosure, the cheetah are all now in the main area i believe.

We saw the Malayan tiger use that enclosure on Saturday, so it definitely has access

100% this. If anyone is doing a half-day Hamerton I would always recommend the afternoon not the morning. :)

Do the Brown Hyaenas at Hamerton tend to be more visible late afternoon (but not mornings) on a regular basis do you know? I ask as I'm hoping to see the ones at Newquay in the autumn and presume they will have a similar activity pattern.

In my experience, I would say yes - mid-afternoon has tended to be the best time. But I'm on a small sample size of visits still. :)

I'll let you know my experience at Newquay. I'm visiting on the 13th August.

I know @TNT has also committed to an update on viewing at Newquay but wanted to say that I popped by yesterday to see the new Hyena's and whilst i think you can all but guarantee you will see them, as there is indoor viewing, it isn't exactly inspiring viewing.... scratched and clouded windows (from previous lion occupants presumably), obstructed view with wooden frame in bedding area and they look very very nervous to the point of flinching when people cupped hands to the window.
They didn't move from indoor bedding over the course of my visit 10-12:30 approx, hope you all have better luck in the afternoon!

Had a little visit to Hamerton yesterday and purchased a guidebook on the way out. Looking at it last night, it mentioned Red Bush Squirrels. Are these off show? Or if they are not, does anyone know where about's they are housed, as definitely didn't see them when walking around. Thanks

Does anyone know if Hamerton still houses cuscus my first few visits they always used to be in with the echidnas (which I am still yet to see after half a dozen visits) and over the last year they seem to have been replaced with the ring tailed possums (another species I’m yet to see in as many visits)

Does Hamerton still have pudu as a free-roaming species?
I seem to remember the pudus were free roaming in 2018 and 2020
