Saw red in the pen and all the tigers exploring their enclosure. With the lions 2 in a pen ( looked female could have been castrated male) the rest 5 let free and second lion 1 in a pen ( again looked female I think) and 1 Male and 5 female around him, is this common? So not cohesive groups but separation amount the lions.
Also no sign of meg/ terry wolves? Wondered if they have had any pups yet

  • Only 14 lions were visible? Maybe some have moved offshow.

  • Are the rest of the other pack(Meg's brothers & sister) now off show?

I did wonder how many were suppose to be present for lions… as animal park had said some lions were aging and they had to be careful they weren’t being picked upon..
No the other 6 I think wolves are all visible and seem like a cohesive pack as all sleeping close to one another each time ..

Putting an animal in a nocturnal exhibit but also giving it an outside space in daylight seems odd to me. Surely would be confusing (harmful?) for it?

How could it either confuse or harm it?

It can go out in daylight if it wants to, and if not, then it doesn't.

Most bats have indoor and outdoor areas, for example. They don't get traumatised by the difference.

There was 26 lions back in 2019 however I know at least another 2 have definitely died since but the number could be down to the teens.
If the oldest 2 are still alive(they were last year) they will turn 20yrs this year

Ben Fogle and Kate Humble return to Longleat Safari Park as hippos make a comeback after 40 years, and the lion pride faces a tense moment with their matriarch Malaika falling ill.

Expect macaque mayhem, red panda check-ups and busy beavers in the wild.
 
If anyone goes Longleat can they see what has happened with the hyenas? On the animal park episode to show on a week Tuesday it says they are recovering from a savage attack! Would love to know what been going on between the two boys!

On June 30th, it was mentioned that the zoo would transfer (0.2) plains zebras to Dartmoor Zoo in Devon in the upcoming weeks*.

On July 4th, the zoo announced that 2+ red deer were born, which are on display in the Deer Park.

On July 11th, it was mentioned that the zoo transferred a (1.0) long-nosed potoroo to Marwell Zoo in Hampshire*.

On July 17th, the zoo announced they reopened the cafe next to Shearwater Lake, now called Shearwater Cabin, to the public on July 15th.

On a visit yesterday, I went to the former handling hall/sloth exhibit and a series of new terrariums have been installed, housing the following:
Chilean Rose Tarantula
Asian Forest Scorpion
Sun Beetle
Glutinous Snail (in a glass bowl)
unidentified snail
Giant Magnus Stick Insect

And in the former three banded armadillo/veiled chameleon exhibit, a tree has been installed for Macleay's Spectres.
 
is it known why they shut the sloth exhibit so quickly, because they weren't there for very long and it seemed like quite a good exhibit for them did it not?
 
Happen to agree, as they have the mural of the sloths on the wall and it doesn’t seem right they aren’t there! Unless it was more to do with visitors getting too close and not leaving sloths alone as was such a public area they were in!
 
The sloths were moved for a few reasons, but mostly because visitors were getting too close as @Rosie183 suggests. There were a few incidents with visitors touching them and making the sloths generally uncomfortable

Combined with the general sparseness of that room I'm not entirely surprised they moved, it's just a shame because they're evidently still struggling to work out quite what to do with that exhibit. I do think the bat cave will better suit them though, both as animals and from a visitor perspective
 
Visited yesterday, and the Dikdik house had been emptied of dirt, food/water and straw plus the Dikdiks were locked outside.
 
I watched Tuesday's episode of Animal Park featuring plans for the new hippos... now I accept things can look different on TV, but is it just me who thinks the new hippo house doesn't look that big? I mean, it IS big - but considering it was stated that it was being designed to house up to 10 adults plus babies, I'm not convinced its big enough! Has anyone seen it first hand, and if so do you have any thoughts on it?

I came away with the same thought following the episode as well. I was confused by that claim in the first place given the new house is effectively the same size as the old one from a footprint standpoint, but assumed they were making better use of internal space for them. I guess they're still assuming the hippos will spend most of their lives outside in the lake like the former pair?

I am yet to see it first hand though, so it could potentially just be camera trickery. It's a comfortable size for the current group at least
 
Having visited Longleat the house is same size from the viewpoint of the lake as every indoor enclosure at longleat .. and since it won’t ever be open to the public I think your right the plan will be for the hippos to mainly be in the lake.
but they haven’t even started that yet thinking they are waiting till autumn to even attempt the hippos out in the open lake. As they are apprehensive of the male hippo Hodar in particular with the sealion and or the boats neither of which he would have seen before, and he maybe aggressive with!
 
I’m assuming doing to days of Spot and Sonia they had access to the lake 12 months a year?
