Global Captive Orca Population

Maybe I’m in the minority here but I actually think if they can get past the red tape SeaWorld could actually be open to accepting the pair. With the death of Kamea, SeaWorld is likely all the more aware of the slowly dwindling numbers of whales at SWT and SWF. This is a chance for them to get a little boost in numbers to delay the population decline and the associated issues, such as needing to combine the two populations.

I cross my fingers for that, would be the best solution for them. I think is very difficult, but no impossible...
 
I think they could. There was talk about SW taking in Toki before she died (we talked about it on here at the time). And the anti-cap movement is nowhere near as big or loud as it was 10 years ago, and captive orca deaths don't make national news anymore. It would be a legitimate rescue and a real strike against the WSP/anti's for failing the whales.

I actually think I agree here. If a suitable home can't be found for Wikie and Keijo otherwise, I personally doubt Seaworld would just allow them to remain at Marineland with the facilities deteriorating.

I don't see them publicly announcing interest, or even a move, for the sake of them getting the whales across (if that was the plan). Therefore, I don't think we'd ever get more than 'rumors' until they're actually at Seaworld already. So we'll just have to wait and see.

It doesn't surprise me to see the French government pushing for this - Seaworld is quite obviously the best option for Wikie and Keijo. It would be very disappointing if Seaworld refused just for the matter of retaining a modest public image.

I would strongly advise against trusting a word out of Mermaid Fight's mouth unless it can be independently verified. She is a chronic liar with a years-long history of telling her following of thousands whatever she wants, no matter how baseless, in order to make herself and her "side" of the captivity debate look better. She is to pro-cap spaces what the likes of Phil Demers is to anti-cap spaces.

There's rumors that they were genuinely preparing for her arrival, even.

Wow, absolutely shocking news - very saddening to hear.

I wonder what the plan is now for Lynn, who following Earth's passing, is now the only orca at Nagoya. Sending one of the females across from Kamogawa makes sense - probably Luna or Lara. But Kamogawa would have to agree on sending one of their females across, which would mean one less whale there. Perhaps Nagoya will attempt to acquire a male from China now..

Or maybe this opens up options for the France orcas or maybe she may be pregnant? Who knows they’ve been trying to breed her with earth for ages now….

But as long as France doesn't want to send Wikie and Keijo to Japan it won't happen. I don't think this situation really changes anything for French government decision... The only reason I see for them agreeing on sending to Japan is just out of desperation after accepting Spain (and SeaWorld...) won't receive them.

The french government is notoriously racist about asian facilities, them blocking the move to japan was the thing that got them in this mess.
 
Does anyone know the reason why Earth's tail was so weird-looking? I know he had it for most of his life (I'm not saying it was related to his death, it's just something I've been curious about for ages, and since we're on the subject..)

As far as I can remember, it's just something he had since birth.

Genetics, presumably. His flukes are incredibly similar to his maternal grandfather, Bingo's, with both of them having almost perfectly flat flukes even as bulls, with significant dark patches in the white areas. The "ruffle" along the edge of Earth's flukes became a lot less dramatic as he aged, and had he continued to age, it probably would have become entirely unnoticeable, as it did on his dorsal fin, so I would bet that it also came from Bingo, but just wasn't documented on him due to the few good-quality photos of him as a juvenile.

It's also possible it could be related to a skin condition, since those "ruffles" seemed to develop around the time Luna was born, when he began facing intense, sustained aggression from Lovey. With the sheer number of rakes he had, it wouldn't be surprising to me if he suffered some sort of skin infection because of it, and maybe his dorsal and flukes became warped because of it, not unlike how Ula at Loro Parque had a warped pectoral fin apparently from a skin infection/issue. But there's no evidence for that with Earth, and considering how similar his flukes otherwise were to Bingo I think genetics is the more likely option.

I dont think refusing to send them to parks that dont have european standards is racist in any way. We can debate about Nagoya, but Suma and Kamogawa are terrible and no animal should be send there. The thing that created the mess was the park in first place, due selling the animals looking only for their profit and not for their well being. And later, the government for dont invest more on their care. They should offer a solution. Like for example, cover the expenses and take care of the animals and their enclosure there at marineland until an appropiate place is available, or until their death.

I agree somewhat, but the activist group(s) that blocked the move cited the 'fact' that people in japan do not care about animals like other people do and view them as objects. Even rational anti caps agree it is excessive and untrue.

Also, the orca tanks in marineland are pretty impossible to fix, especially with live animals in them. They're in a state of disrepair, they would have to move or die.
