Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2025

I saw them during my shift, and since we're down to two adult Females, I think it's time to bring in a few females and a Male since the last one passed away.
There aren’t females to go around, and they’re very fragile animals to move unnecessarily. LA is very lucky to be in the position of having two female calves that will be able to grow up into breeders there. A male shouldn’t be too hard to source from one of the San Diego parks, however.

The Sichuan Takins now have a pool at the very end of their habitat.
Has there not always been a pool in the takin exhibit?

You’re right that they have had a pool there for a long time. I know it underwent renovation in recent years but I remember that the pool wasn’t always filled with water. I think since it’s summer time they decided to fill it.

Thank you! I was pretty sure I remembered there being one, but I wasn’t quite sure.

Are Takins partial to a dip?
In my experience, they can be! Especially in warmer climates. I have seen the takin at the San Diego Zoo standing in their pool before that exhibit was converted for the pandas, and it is a pretty common sight to see takin swimming in the lakes at The Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio in the summertime!

Fascinating, I’d have never expected that!

My trip to California starts in two weeks. Does anyone know if these species are still at the L.A. Zoo? I'd also be interested to know if they've added any new species in recent months. Thanks

-Antilocapra americana peninsularis
-Sapajus robustus
-Cephalophus niger
-Gazella spekei
-Tapirus pinchaque
-Taxidea taxus
-Struthio molybdophanes

All of these should be on exhibit except for the California Condor which are behind the scenes.

Unless something has changed very recently, the last black duiker at LA is not on display. There is also a California condor in the Zoo's bird show, and there is also a California condor chat daily, where staff bring out spotting scopes and binoculars to view the Zoo's condors in their semi-off-show exhibits.

Trumpeter Swans are in their new Habitat, and the Tasmanian Devils are back.

Yoshi the chimpanzee had a baby on August 20. She was in the Chimpanzee Penthouse today with her baby and adult females Vindi and Regina.

There is a Tammar Wallaby joey, but when I saw it on Member Morning on August 3, I was told that it would only have access to the exhibit when the keeper was in the exhibit due to concerns over ravens possibly attacking the joey while it was still small.

Repairs have been completed in the rhinoceros pool exhibit (the one next to the markhor exhibit) so Marshall can again enjoy his pool.

Hello. So we have had a family membership for the LA over the last several years. My wife went today with our 2 kids and her mother. When we renewed our membership we were allowed entrance to a member plus a guest if the other member isn't present. They gave her a hard time and forced my mother in law to purchase a ticket saying the membership stipulations had changed on July 1st when GLAZA parted ways. Neither my wife nor I remember seeing a correspondence detailing the new membership details. Even so, how is it fair that the membership benefits are changed after we have already completed the transaction for membership under other pretenses. Can anyone shed light on this?

Hi Angelo, this sounds like terrible customer service. I have a member renewal form in front of me as I write this and it says for Individual Plus that it is for "Daytime Admission for one adult named on card plus one guest" for the Family it says "Daytime Admission for two adults named on card plus your own children or grandchildren (ages 2-17)". It sounds like for the family membership that is a change? If so, it should have been communicated clearly to you.

I am not sure that I even want to renew my membership at this point. The zoo is being run horribly. Exhibits are empty and decaying all over the zoo. The once promising plan to modernize the zoo appears to be dead. It's a mess. And then there is the loss of the elephants.

I'm sorry to hear of the horrible experience that your family had getting into the zoo. I have been a happy member of the zoo for almost 30 years. Even a year ago I would never imagine stopping being a member, but then I could not imagine how badly the zoo has declined.

Looking at the zoo's website, it states under the FAQ section that "membership cards are non-transferable" (under the heading "Can I send my children to the zoo with their grandparents?") and the family $185 membership includes just the two adults named on the card plus children or grandchildren. You would need the family deluxe $235 membership, which allows for the addition of an extra adult and two free guest passes. The zoo clearly should have informed everyone of any changes and it would seem that they failed to do that.
