Unfortunately, two of the cubs died in mid-May. Investigation revealed two causes. The first was that mother Amérie did not have enough milk to feed all the cubs adequately for a longer period of time. In addition, there was a special water germ, which is not unusual and does not pose a problem for adult animals, but was life-threatening for the vulnerable young otters. The two remaining cups, a male and a female, were treated with antibiotics and have now recovered.

According to posts by visitors on social media, three giant otters were born at New Forest Wildlife Park around two to three weeks ago.

Two giant otter deaths that were reported in the respective news threads last week:

In the Zoo Lodz news thread, @Peter reported that the 13-year-old male Cashibo had died.

In the Zoo Zlín news thread, @hawkkeye reported that the 15-year-old male Dagget had died.

Last week, a giant otter was born for the first time at AquaZoo Leeuwarden. This is also their first litter for the parents Viggo and Maya.

Unfortunately the young has died. Caretakers noticed in recent weeks that he was eating less and did not seem to be feeling well.

Despite intensive care and examinations, he passed away on Sunday evening. Investigations show that the cause of death was complications from a liver condition.

From Zoo Leipzig, 3-year-old male Arno moved to Buenos Aires Ecoparque in Argentina. He moved there with a female from Zoo Zlín (probably Dana or Jana, but that has not yet been announced) to form a new breeding pair.

The pair has had six cubs at the Ecoparque in recent years. Now, the giant otter family has been transferred to El Impenetrable National Park to live in the facilities of Rewilding Argentina, and eventually be released into the wild.
