Since being brought on in December last year as the new Senior Director of Animal Care, it appears that Dr. Luis Neves' influence has taken full effect on the Zoo, as just these last 2 months have seen without a doubt the greatest influx of new species the Zoo has seen IN YEARS (and I'm not saying that lightly, as an example, compare this list to my previous list from February). This was the change that was needed, and I'm so happy to see the Zoo progressing after what has seemed like multiple years of phasing species out. Dr. Neves is known for his work with Birds, and that has transferred over here as many new species of birds have been introduced to the Zoo, including 3 species of Hornbill when the Zoo had 0 just a few months ago, along with the first Sloth at the Zoo in 5 years (and having it be in the Tropical Rainforest Aviary no less), and a few other new species. All of these changes have been extremely exciting to see and I can't wait to see what happens next. It was so fun to walk around and photograph all the new acquisitions, something I haven't really felt at WPZ in a long time. I might be speaking too early, but this is a great example of what bringing in a new director can do as long as they're qualified.

'The African Savanna' | Home to a majority of the Zoo’s African collection, this area is speculated (and most likely given the factors) to be the Zoo’s next big overhaul after the “Forest Trailhead” exhibit is completed. The former Hippo exhibit is actually being worked on at the moment, but no word on what is moving in so that is something to watch for. The biggest concerns are that the plains exhibit needs to be leveled out, and the giraffe barn needs to be renovated.

'Trail of Vines (Tropical Asia)' | Home to the tree dwellers of Asia, this is another area the Zoo lumps into the “Tropical Asia” area (The Zoo currently doesn’t have any Malyan Tapir as they’re looking to redo the exhibit next year and get ready for a pair)
  • Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii)
  • Bornean Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus)
  • (former Reticulated Python enclosure is empty, but being worked on)
  • Siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus) (also the first time I've seen them out in a couple of months)
  • Rhinoceros Hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros) (took over the Francois Langurs habitat)
'Assam Rhino Reserve (Tropical Asia)' | The last area the zoo the lumps into the “Tropical Asia” area, this is home to the Zoo’s Greater One-Horned Rhino along with a few other small species

  • Visayan Warty Pigs (Sus cebifrons)
  • Malayan Tapirs (Tapirus indicus) (had a previous absence at the Zoo while the habitat was being renovated, now there's a young pair)

'Australasia' | Another small-ish sized area of the Zoo, home to a variety of Australian species + the Snow Leopards

'Tropical Rainforest' | One of my personal favorites at the Zoo, the area covers the Rainforests of Central and South America, and Africa. The first walkthrough areas of many enclosures and the walkthrough Aviary cover Central and South America, while the outdoor portions cover Africa. This is one of the areas to receive many new species over the last few weeks, which has been very exciting to hear about.

Family Farm | The Zoo’s petting area / farm animal exhibit, this area is slated for a massive overhaul next year I believe. Moves are already happening such as the retirement and departure of the Zoos’ two Jersey Steers who were moved to a sanctuary, I believe.

Really excited to see all the changes going on and what's happening next.
