Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2025

Another Piece of February 2025 News Not Mentioned:

On February 28th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (1.0) king colobus monkey to Paignton Zoo in Devon the week prior.

Paignton Zoo

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I suppose the king colobus status in UK zoos is slowly improving (as it is on the European Continent)!?

Afaik only Blackpool and Paignton hold them in the UK. I don't have any numbers to hand but the Blackpool group has always seemed more flourishing, I saw 8 -10 there a few years ago though I noticed their outdoor enclosure was quite small but nicely glassed giving warmth from sun and protection from weather etc . Paignton have held them for many decades, as far back as 1960's they had a pair, but they don't seem to increase and usually there is only a trio or so there. They have an occassional birth but
their group seems to still stay very small. But I do not know the precise number at each of these zoos at present and so hope this is not an innaccurate summary of the current situation. Or if there is another holder somewhere.

According to Zootierliste, both Africa Alive and Flamingo Land also have bachelor groups, each with three individuals.

That indicates breeding has increased a little if two small male groups have been established. Presumably surplus males from the two breeding groups but I suspect the majority are from Blackpool?

The three Flamingo Land males were all imported from Duisburg in 2024, while Africa Alive had a female in addition to the three males in 2022, so it could be that two of the males are offspring of the third (I'm sure others here know more on the sources of these animals than I do).

This seems to be a species that doesn't really prosper in our European zoos, unlike the Black & White species which breed freely.

Think I’m remembering correctly (?) that the sign at AA said that they’d recently arrived from Blackpool to form a bachelor group.

Think that's far more likely- at least than that any were from Paignton as they have only very sporadic breeding from their pair/trio afaik.

Hello. Does anyone know what 'Project Giraffe' is? In a post advertising memberships, there is a small image in the corner that reads 'Coming 2026... Project Giraffe!'. Unless I've been living under a rock, I haven't seen any speculation relating to this.

This is the first I've heard of it, but I imagine they're just re-building the giraffe house, which would be very good because I've always thought the house itself and the yard were a bit too small for them.

What I imagine they could do is expand the outdoor area into what is currently the blesbok paddock (is the blesbok still in there? It's been a while since I last visited) and make the house a lot bigger, perhaps re-doing the elevated walkway and moving the tapirs and capybaras to accommodate all of this.

The Blesbok recently moved to Knowsley Safari

I would say it would simply be best to expand the enclosure all the way to the farm. I don't necessarily think the space is the problem, it's more the infrastructure.

Is it just 0:2 giraffes left now? Olympia is one of them(born at Marwell 2012)
Hybrid giraffe ... I suppose?

So, it is 0.2:
F Olympia (cb. Marwell 2012, arrived ...?)
F .. (cb. ..... 20x?, arrived ...?)

The 2 bigger questions:
A) What was or was there anything before them 2 FF?
(This bc I have had it on past "Intel" FF Sonia, Sive, Ciara, Caoimhe, Saoirse (all hybrids born Fota Wildlife Park and F Lily (daughter Sonia x Fota's Rothschild bull)).

B) This Project Giraffe ... anyone in the know here what it is supposed to be and mean for giraffe at Blackpool Zoo in future?
