Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo Nanjing Hongshan Zoo News

I once visited the African zone under construction last year, but due to the zoo's requirements, I am unable to disclose pictures now. As the zoo is surrounded by cities and there is no more construction area, the area of the new area is limited. The zoo cannot present a "stunning and large-scale" exhibition area here, but there will be some things to look forward to in terms of detailed construction.
The giraffes at Hongshan Zoo used to be of the East African type, similar to Reticulated giraffes, with populations from Japan. However, they have now introduced South African giraffes as a new breeding force.
No interbreeding / hybridisation ... I hope between Japan origins reticulated (species purebred or not????) and the southern giraffe imported en masse from southern Africa!? Any more substantial data or information there?

Hongshan Zoo purchased a male that appeared to be a South African giraffe a few years ago as a new male breeding force, and hybridization is already taking place. This is my personal observation, and there is no absolute data to support it. Chinese zoos do not really care about the lineage of giraffes.

The gorillas seem to have settled down well in Hongshan Zoo, and we expect to see them in October.

Hongshan Zoo has released additional photos of its four gorilla brothers on its official WeChat public account. The gorillas appear to be in excellent condition, receiving good feeding and care, and have already grown accustomed to their new environment. It is hoped that the African Zone will open soon, allowing visitors to see them.

Incidentally, the zoo has built a greenhouse at its food base in the suburbs of Nanjing to cultivate plants that the gorillas love to eat.

Additionally, they made a somewhat bold decision to house gorillas and meerkats together to enrich each other's lives, and so far everything has been peaceful between the two species.
Sincerely, I Don't Understand Why Gorillas And Meerkats Can Mix Enclosure...

According to visitors who were invited to preview the animal exhibit, these meerkats were relocated because they had been heavily bullied in their original group.

This decision has sparked significant controversy among Chinese zoo enthusiasts, with the vast majority expressing confusion over this mixed-species arrangement.

Didn’t Artis (Amsterdam) also mix their gorilla’s with meerkats for a while in an attempt to fight against a mice infestation? I believe that has now ended, but I don’t know how or why it ended.

Ah, does that mean using a meerkats to kill mice? How is the effect?

According to the report on the official WeChat public account of the zoo, internet celebrity Khaby Lame visited Hongshan Zoo today (September 11th).

Yup, at some point Artis had meerkats in multiple exhibits in an attempt to have them kill mice. I’m not sure how succesfull they were, as far as I’m aware they are now back to having meerkats in just one exhibit. And not many zoos seem to have copied the idea, so I think something didn’t really work perfectly? Perhaps someone else knows more?

Hongshan Zoo has announced that the new South Gate Area (including the African Zone, Madagascar Zone and Australian Zone) and the Tangjiahe Area will open to the public on October 18th. Animals such as gorillas, wildebeests, rock wallabies, dholes, yellow-throated martens, and Sichuan takins will be on display for the first time. Meanwhile, the ticket price will increase from 40 RMB (approximately 5.5 USD) to 70 (approximately 10 USD).

Ah, and collared lemurs (in picture with cattas). Unless imported from native country, I would almost bet they were bought from Zajezd.

Those are common brown lemurs. They have been in the zoo since approximately 2018, but they were not on display for some years before, as the old primate house was demolished for construction.

A few days ago, a new member was welcomed to the local animal area: Snake-eating Turtle(Cuora flavomarginata)

The South Gate New Area and Tangjiahe Area of Hongshan Zoo have been opened, but some animals such as the Dhole and Yellow-throated Marten have not been exhibited yet. I will visit at an appropriate time and continue to pay attention to further developments.
