Bioparc Valencia Bioparc Valencia News

New species:
- The park has welcomed four African forest dormice (Graphiurus murinus) arriving from illegal wildlife trade. The animals were found in poor condition and were transferred to Bioparc Fuengirola as an authorized collaborating entity. Once there, the technical team was able to identify various reptiles such as monitors and snakes, insects, rodents or sugar gliders and subsequently provide them the necessary care. In the seizure, 5 dormice were found, of which unfortunately one did not manage to survive and the rest have arrived at Bioparc Valencia.
These four dormice will be put on show on one of the exhibits at the aardvark burrow once they pass the quarantine process and are ready to be put on show.

- The park has also welcomed five breeding pairs of Western barn owl (Tyto alba alba) coming from Tierra Rapaz to start a breeding and release project in the Valencian countryside. They will be kept off-show as just breeding animals; they will not be displayed to the public.

A couple of weeks ago I went to the bioparc and forgot to write down the news I saw (although they were few).

- I was hoping that the expansion work had already begun in the area bordering the current zoo, however, it seems they haven't started yet, or at least nothing is known about it. Scaffolding was visible in the “alquerias” area (the smallest of the three expansion zones).

- The African forest dormice were still off show.

- This was the first time I saw the European otters in their enclosure, even though they arrived some time ago. Some changes were made to the enclosure (I suppose this species is more escapist than the spotted-necked otter), and these changes make it difficult to fully view the enclosure from one of the viewing points.

- If I am not wrong, a third blesbok has been born at the end of the summer.

For my part, in my last visit, I saw a solitary (Phelsuma madagascariensis) a lot of time without this Species on show, in the enclosure where the panther chameleons should be. But no chameleons on show.
In my two last visits the garganey (two females) are now in the flamingo area, but no sign of the male.

I went today and saw an ostrich nest with 4 or 5 eggs. I wonder if they are fertile eggs.

I have seen them some times before, but now the sings have finally been updated to tell that they are Eurasian otters instead of the old African ones. I agree the wall is too high and they are difficult to see. Definitely not the best otter enclosure I've seen.

The burger restaurant is closed and fenced off. Not sure if this is related to the expansion works though.

Today in that terrarium I saw 3 chameleons, a gecko and a hermit crab. The chameleons were quite small, I think they are youngsters.

22 year old African Elephant Metzi has been transferred to the Stoso Zoo, in Hungry. She is also pregnant and due December 2026 sire of the calf is Tooth.

That sure is interesting reading! If I am correct Sosto Zoo has one breeding cow in F Kwanza and I seem to remember that M Tooth spend time at Sosto Zoo in the past. Perhaps a Quid pro Quo Breeding Loan arrangement?

Anyone on the Hungary zoo front have any further information on the move and the status of the current Sosto breeding group?

I know I lamented and been frequent quite critical at the general lack of breeding in Espagna in recent decades due to in large part to animal management stuck way too far into the past and maintained groups of non-breeding way too long before taking any positive action or even have or keep socially inept individuals while allowing perfectly healthy cows in reproductive age to not be mated or bred properly or ... lest be ... even in sub standard exhibit and facilities.

I am glad that with the recent moves in / out from Bioparco that finally the first birth of a white rhino is approaching fast. I checked my files and the last birth .... in Espagna .... was Zola (shock horror ... in 2015 and the calf just lived 3 days only) in Cabarceno!!!! Perhaps, we may expect another female to breed and calve in the next few years.

The chameleons you have seen should be these three females from Zurich, posted by sivatherium

New individuals:
- The park has obtained four Panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis), one male and three females, from Zoo Zürich. The three females are on show while the male will be kept off-show, since they can't be housed together until the animals are older than a year.

It has been closed since a few months ago i think, let's hope working has started and it will be finished when they said it was going to be ready.

Hatchling news:
- Two Western black crowned crane (Balearica pavonina pavonina) chicks have hatched at the Bioparc, the first time this species has bred here!

The chicks were out today with their parents and all other animals in that enclosure. The pic is not very good, but all the gang is here: bongo, duikers, dik-dik and cranes:

I saw a new snake in the chameleon, crab and gecko terrarium. There was no sign so I don't know which species it is. It's a very small and thin snake. I'm always surprised by how many animals Bioparc manages to put together.

Just before the park closing the Madagascar area was very active with all the 6 lemur species and the fosas playing around. It was a great experience.

Last but not least, I want to say that I'm happy that we can see more and more babies in Bioparc. The babies of the warthogs, rock hyraxes, cranes and drills are funny to watch. I only saw 3 rhinos today, so maybe the baby rhino is about to arrive too, and the African spurred tortoises were mating very loudly while all children were asking their parents what was happening.

Here it is! The first ever Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) calf to be born at the Bioparc! Also the first time this species breeds at any spanish zoo in a very long while, wonderful news. :)

When is the baby rhino expected to go to the outdoor enclosure?
I'm really looking forward to seeing it, it's beautiful!:)

Update on Southern white rhinoceros calf:

The calf has been confirmed as a male and has been granted access to an outdoor paddock (behind the scenes):

The baby rhinoceros born at BIOPARC Valencia is a male

Technical staff have confirmed that it is male and that its feeding and behavior are excellent, so they have already granted it access to the large outdoor enclosure to promote its growth and well-being.

The behavior of the father and the other females is very positive, as they approach with the curiosity and interest typical of this new situation, which suggests a natural integration.

New species:
- The Bioparc has welcomed a school of 60 Striped Barombi Mbo cichlids (Stomatepia mariae) from Acuario Fluvial de Zaragoza.
The park aims to establish a successful breeding group to help boost the population of this critically endangered endemic.
Once they have passed quarantine, they will be mixed with the Nile crocodiles, as well as 10 other species of fish.

Pure luck... ;)

On the other hand, the dormice already have an enclosure (formerly Gambian rats, opposite the former porcupines in the "aardvark burrow") and a sign, but I haven't managed to see them.
