North American Polar Bear Population 2025

I believe the only unpaired females available right now are Amelia Gray, Astra, and Kova. Unless a female gets moved from a current breeding pair, then it’s likely one of those 3. Koda in Memphis should also receive a new mate either soon or before next season too.

And Laerke at Pt Defiance. :)

Not that this seems to matter with the current state of the population, but Kulu is related to all listed except for Kova through his mother. As his father's only offspring, though, he is very genetically valuable!

Do we know if Laerke is included in the breeding program? Due to her issues as a cub, she is half the size of her sister. I think she’s still only 330 something pounds as compared to her sister’s, albeit large for a female, roughly 665 pounds.

Oh wow! I didn't know that. Maybe not then?

Kalluk at San Diego Zoo has died.

From the zoo's facebook page:
"It's been an incredibly difficult week for all of us here at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
With profound sadness we share the passing of Kalluk, a truly extraordinary polar bear and special member of the San Diego Zoo family. At the advanced age of 24 years old, Kalluk passed peacefully on August 14, surrounded by the Wildlife Care team who knew him best and cared for him deeply since he was a cub.
Recently Kalluk began to show signs of age-related illness, prompting our dedicated wildlife care and health experts to conduct a proactive and comprehensive wellness evaluation. After thoroughly reviewing the results and evaluating all options, wildlife experts made the difficult and compassionate decision to say goodbye.
Kalluk's story began in 2001, when he and his sister, Tatqiq, arrived as orphaned cubs alongside their companion, Chinook. Without mothers to guide them, the three cubs found a second chance at life here at the San Diego Zoo, where they have thrived for decades ever since. Kalluk became an ambassador in the truest sense, opening eyes and hearts to his species and the urgent need to protect it.
At 24 years old, Kalluk lived a remarkable life, as male polar bears live an average of 15–18 years in native habitats. Wildlife Care Specialists will remember him as a calm strength within the trio, with an inquisitive and adventurous nature that left an indelible mark on his care team and the countless guests who were inspired by him. Over his 24 years, Kalluk acted as a bridge between worlds, contributing to groundbreaking research on polar bear physiology, sensory perception, and adaptation. These studies have provided global conservationists and scientists with crucial insights into how polar bears navigate a rapidly changing world, helping to ensure a future for his counterparts.
After his passing, Tatqiq and Chinook were given the opportunity to say their goodbyes. Being with them in this moment reminded us that the feeling of loss transcends species, and our team remains committed to supporting them through this transition.
Kalluk lived a life of purpose, dignity, and connection. His legacy will live on through the conservation work he made possible and the lives he touched along the way. We are grateful for the time we had with him and for your support as we honor his journey. Please join us in celebrating Kalluk’s life and offering condolences to all who are feeling his absence."

Both Haley and Suka are now denning at Detroit. Toledo’s Crystal and Columbus’ Aurora should also be denning now. Aside from those 3, what other facilities have an opportunity for cubs? Also, what female ended up moving to Como?

Nan is at Como Park Zoo. Although I haven't heard of a younger, breeding female polar bear moving here. Hogle Zoo has a possibility of cubs with Nikita and Neva being a breeding pair. Hope at the Brookfield Zoo and Luna at the Buffalo Zoo have a possibility as well. I don't think Qannik and Bo were introduced long enough for breeding this past spring.

As of April, there were plans to move a young female to the Como Park Zoo where she could hopefully breed with Kulu.

I would say it is just as likely that Luna in Buffalo is pregnant as it is that Talini at Lincoln Park is pregnant, which is to say that it is extremely unlikely. Luna's keepers have expressed a lot of skepticism that she will ever bear cubs.

What makes you think that Qannik and Borealis were not together for long enough? I'm just asking out of curiosity as nothing had been said on Zoochat previously as far as I am aware.

Just speculation and I forgot they were on exhibit together for a bit this past spring. I was thinking they weren't even introduced on exhibit yet.

1.0 Kallik is moving from St. Louis to Oregon this fall in what I guess is a future breeding recommendation with Nora.
Saint Louis Zoo on Instagram: "As part of a new national initiative to advance polar bear conservation, the Saint Louis Zoo announces plans for male polar bear Kallik to move from Saint Louis Zoo to Oregon Zoo in late fall 2025. The move is part of a comprehensive plan by the Polar Bear Population Alliance — a consortium of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums focused on maintaining a sustainable, genetically diverse polar bear population in the U.S. Kallik and his twin brother Kallu moved to Saint Louis Zoo in March 2025. There are no plans for Kallu to move at this time. The bears will turn 3 years old in November, an important milestone in their “subadulthood.” From 2.5 to 5 years old, polar bears experience rapid growth and increased hormone production. This motivates male polar bears to seek more independence as they enter adulthood. Separating Kallu and Kallik at this age will help both males prepare for their next phase of life. Guests are encouraged to stop by and see both males at Polar Bear Point before Kallik’s departure later this fall. When they're older, Kallu and Kallik may be recommended to pair with female polar bears, though plans for that have yet to be determined. In the meantime, guests needn’t worry about Kallu and Kallik being on their own. Polar bears generally lead solitary lives except when they’re breeding or raising cubs. Nora's incidentally going to be moved to Henry Vilas.

The post clearly states he's going to live alone in Oregon, and that there currently aren't future plans for him to breed.

Lots of transfers, wow. It'll be interesting to see who else moves to complete these breeding recommendations. Nora and Kali definitely need new mates next season and if all goes well, I can't imagine Nuka and Lee going unbred next season either. If Astra is indeed the female going to Como it'll be interesting to see how everything plays out.

So far, the 9 pairs that could be expecting cubs this season include:

Nuka x Haley at Detroit
Nuka x Suka at Detroit

Kali x Crystal at Toledo

Lee x Aurora at Columbus

Sakari x Luna at Buffalo

Siku x Talini at Lincoln Park

Bo x Qannik at Louisville

Nikita x Neva at Hogle

Hudson x Hope at Brookfield
