Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2025

32-year-old Tamani has given birth at Zoosafari Fasanolandia. The father is Nasibu. This is the first time in 50 years that a gorilla has been born in Italy.

There are some suggestions this was an unsanctioned (by EEP) breeding as the zoo was not supposed to breed Nasibu and these females, the group was set up on the proviso they were non-breeders. Of course it was originally planned they were to try and breed with the old wildcaught male Riu who sadly died before the females' move was completed. Nasibu (from Paira Daiza) who had already known them in Rotterdam then replaced him as group male. Accidental or deliberate birth, who knows?

Three males will soon head to Saint Martin La Plaine:

1.0 Kumi (10/08/2004) Kumba II x Shani
1.0 Sadiki (10/10/2006) Roututu x Bagira
1.0 Kajolu (08/12/2009) Roututu x Bagira

Another male (one of Tam Tam's sons), will head to Beauval. Either:

1.0 Euro (04/01/1999) Tam Tam x Hyasmina
OR
1.0 Gincko (27/09/2001) Tam Tam x Pamela

Presumably the plan is for whichever male to head the Beauval breeding group, with Asato and his three youngest sons moved into a bachelor group.

The three males will arrive in Saint Martin La Plainee later today.

According to the article, Euro will be moving to Beauval this November.

Two female gorillas will soon be moving from Artis to other Dutch zoos. At the same time, two females from those zoos will be moving to Artis.

The current silverback at Artis has already sired many offspring, so it is in the interests of the European population that he does not reproduce any further. The two females that are moving are still allowed to have offspring, so they are moving to a place where that is possible. The two females that are coming to Artis are currently on contraception because it is better for the population not to spread their genes any further at this time.

Yanga and Dafina will move to Burgers' Zoo and Safaripark Beekse Bergen. A female from both zoos will then move to Artis.

It's a young male too - he was born a month ago.

This is a case where I'm not sure EEP sanctioned these breedings. Nasibu is a full brother of Akili at Artis and he is not allowed to breed anymore due to over-representation. But even if that is so I still think it is nice for the only Italian park with gorillas to have a proper family like this.

I had thought so too - the mother Tonka also comes from very well represented lines. It could very well just be an accidental breeding.

well, saying so, it is hoped they are situated in a large enclosure full of shrubs and large trees, and lots of withdrawing places with an inside building with lots of rooms and halls. must be wonderful!

In mid-November, Asato and his five sons Mapenzi, Yamba, Kiwano, M'Baku and Kovanga will move to the bachelor enclosure in Beauval. A day later, the male Euro will move from Saint Martin La Plaine to Beauval to join the three females Kabinda, Sheila and Sawa. Two new females will also be added to this group.

Just as I predicted - almost. It's interesting that the older two sons, Mapenzi and Yamba, will also be joining the new bachelor group. They are both neutered, so could have theoretically been tolerated by the new silverback, but perhaps it's easier for them to remain with their brothers.

It'll also be interesting to see where the new females come from. Kabinda's post reproductive now, and Sheila's also entering her mid 30's now, so the zoo is absolutely due for a few more additional females to breed with Euro once he arrives.

I am very happy to hear this, Euro is genetically valueable and it‘s really great that he gets his own breeding group now!

most possible is that Nasibu is of another genetic make-up compared to Akili.
they are full brothers. but that doesnot mean they carry the same genetic information.

I'm not even sure whether that's testable in gorillas. What's more likely is that whilst Akili was not allowed to breed anymore, Nasibu still is. Despite their line having overrepresentation, the EEP would still want to have members of that line still continue to breed, so the easiest way to do that would be to not breed from some members of the line, whilst still allowing others to periodically.
