ZSL London Zoo 'Not to be missed'

We are off to London Zoo next weekend on a trip!

I haven't been since I was a child which was a very loooong time ago :p

What are the must sees at London? Just in case we don't manage the whole thing! We have approximately 6 hours there!

Any advice will be gratefully received :D

The B.U.G.S. building is unmissable in my opinion. It's a fantastic house about ecosystems and biodiversity and hold invertebrates, fish and a few reptiles, mammals and birds (as well as the anteaters and rhea outside)

6 hours you will probably be able to see most exhibits. I would say gorilla kingdom, clore rainforest, the new childrens zoo, B.U.G.S and the komodo dragons. Have a nice day :)

Aww thanks all I am highlighting these on my map :)

I am especially interested in seeing how as a zoo it has adapted its older buildings and layout to cater for up to date exhibits!

My only memories of going before is people feeding the elephants over a concrete moat and wall?? and the old penguin pool! Which I am especially looking forward to seeing as I love the design! It must have been around the mid 70s!!!

In addition to those already mentioned (particularly the clore, BUGS and the anteaters), I really enjoy the aquarium and the reptile house. Keep an eye on the time though, because I've never spent less than an hour in either building - 6 hours should be enough to see most things though. I think the Blackburn Pavillion (to see the toucans, free flight area and the hummingbirds) and Meet the monkeys (to watch the ever-playful squirrel monkeys) are also worth a quick walk through even if you don't have much time.

Elephant paddock now houses camels and the Lubetkin Pool is now a fountain, so that's what to expect from those childhood memories now. Bear Mountain was great (albeit little bear activity), until they wasted the space as Outback last year.

I think you'll be interested by the way that the old Bird House has been remodelled as the Blackburn Pavilion. The Reptile House is not to be missed, although I never seem to get a good view of the king cobra. The new children's zoo looks to have some interesting exhibits. Don't miss the Clore and keep your fingers crossed that they have opened the round house again, so that you may see the aye-ayes (but don't bet on it). If you are short of time, I would give the north bank a miss, unless you are a real bird enthusiast, as it's birds only there now.
I hope you really enjoy your visit.

Alan

P.S. I forgot to say how much I agree about BUGS - although I hate the new name.

I agree Why waste such a magnificant structure on................................................Wallabys! ;)
Hope you have a good time KarenZOO the new childrens zoo looks pretty good too. The Cat terraces should of remained the same layout some of the enclosures have been home to Monkey species but the Lions and Tigers are still there.

Thanks all I have got it all highlighted on my map and have been studying it on the website!

I got some bad news and good news today!!

Bad news is the bus trip we were going on has been cancelled! Believe it or not we were the only 2 booked on it!! It picked us up and was then picking up in Colchester and Ipswich and was not unreasonably priced at £18 ( approx £14 by train plus the hassle of the underground with camera equipment! ) we didnt think that was to bad!

GOOD NEWS we are now driving :) so we can get there for opening time and stay till closing :) My fella was looking forward to sitting back and relaxing but its only a couple of hours!

Argh dont get us started on that again!

Have a nice time karen... Be sure to give us a review once you get back.

Hi karenZoo

As a foreigner who hast visited the London Zoo several times, I must say:

This zoo has lost a lot of its attractivity during the last 20 years. No more elephants, no more rhinos, no more leopards (Panthera pardus), no more big bears. The last Giant Panda has also gone a couple of years/decades ago. And don't mention the animals, that are not highlights for ordinary zoo-visitors and are no longer kept as well like Chinese pont herons and some birds of prey.

As a capital city zoo, London Zoo is far, far behind the Berlin Zoo for example. And by the way: The entrance fee is very high (Although I have to say, that I don't know what's the average icome of an ordinary labour family in Great Britain is).

For me, the reasons for that "down grading" are: Cutting the financial support thru the gouverment (aka as thatcherism). Mismanagement. Not enough resistance against animal rights activists.

To be fair I must say that the London Zoo still has an excellent reptile collection. And as new highlights in the last 20 years, komodo dragons and aye-ayes has been acquired.

Whatever. I wish you a very pleasant stay there.

the pygmy hippos are a total must, they are opposite the camels, they come right up to the fence, we had a really good experience with them.

I spent roughly 6 hours at the zoo a few weeks back and i'd say it would be enough, though i didnt get a chance to visit the Aquarium.

Thanks for all the replies :) we went yesterday and had a fantastic day!

I am not very good at reporting but will just say what we enjoyed and what we felt was not as good as expected!

We arrived at the car park at 9.30 just as it was opening so we were banging down the door to get in at 10.
Straight into Gorilla Kingdom which we both thought was fantastic! Lovely viewing area and the gorillas were all very active first thing. Would have loved to see them climbing. Very impressed.

Next we went in the African Bird Safari another plus!! Even though I have a fear of free flying/roaming birds I enjoyed it (even though they all had beady eyes *shiver*). Then the reptile house! What an amazing collection, really blew us away! Fantastic building and we really didnt spend long enough in there but there was to much to see.

Next the Mappin terrace, not a lot going on took more photos of baby ducklings, but interesting to see from the photo in the gallery how it once housed polar bears!
Komodo Dragons HUGE disappointment the exhibit was closed due to maintenance??! Was looking forward to comparing them to Colchester's!

The Aquarium very interesting collection, again we could have spent longer. My partner was disappointed it wasnt bigger.

Next into Africa, Hunting dogs asleep on 1st circuit, second time round all awake and running up and down hunting a dog on the other side of the canal! another highlight!
Warthogs were getting upset by 2 keepers lowering a water trough into the enclosure and the male was putting on a wonderful show of snorting and pawing the dirt, very threatening!
The other animals were all browsing but the tapirs unfortunately were asleep!

It was a very warm day!

Snowdon aviary, again fantastic (conquering that phobia) the structure alone is amazing and i took agood few photos of that alone! Didnt do the rest of the birds we were hoping to go back but was to tired!

Clore Rainforest was brilliant, the sloths were very active even the keepers were surpised! Only disappointment I didnt see the jumping rats at all and its a shame the bats aren't in a walk through exhibit, good ground views of the rainforest.

MeerKats - a baby was out so very crowded, otters all asleep, impressed with there enclosure and the heron fishing in it.

Lunch on the picnic lawn - a welcome break.

Pengiun pool very disappointing seemed to be more of an advertising space for the sponsor ppppp pick a more inspiring design or maybe its just that whipsnade's comes with a stunning view.

Through the butterfly paradise, the pelicans and flamingos were very photogenic in the sun.
Into bugs another fantastic building and again we could have spent alot longer reading all the information available and studying the bugs etc at length. No anteater in sight.
Meet the monkeys - only a couple we could spot but a very busy exhibit.
Blackburn Pavillon - another highlight and impressive building! slightly freaked out by the hummingbirds getting a bit to close.
Lions and tigers both asleep as per :)
Old penguin pool - another highlight and a fantastic use of this amazing piece of art deco/modernism at its best. took plenty of pictures.
Animal adventure - unfortunately it was packed and we didnt go in.
Camels - think they could have made more of this enclosure given its previous use.
Pygmy hippo pool was empty.
And back to the gorillas again :)

We went round a few more for a second look!

Overall a fantastic day but both felt we have been now and would probably not use our membership of ZSL to come again but would definately use it a lot at Whipsnade this year!
More of an issue with the location than the zoo its self, there was plenty of quiet corners and according to the staff it was a quiet day due to the marathon!!!
Well worth a visit tho and although we felt we had seen most things we wanted to we could have spent longer at some of the exhibits as there was so much to see.

Sorry my review isn't up to much, and thank you for all your advice, it was a great help!

So gorilla Kingdom is better than what people are saying?
It looks good and it is maturing steadily and more climbing oppurtunities have been given.
Anything about a new silverback?
Thanks.

It must be maturing alot better than it looked when first opened as it was then as far as i`m concerned it was the worst exhibit in the U.K for Gorillas will have to wait to see if my view changes when i visit later in the year.
