Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoo news 2025

Some brief notes from a visit today:

- They have seemingly been progressing very quickly on the RRH exhibit/Eco Island and doesn't look like it will take ages. (Will add images to gallery)
- Bongo & Lowland Nyala were sharing the exhibit today, both herds (1:2 & 0:2 respectively) were out in the rain
- There was only 1 Visayan Warty Pig and offshow area of the house was boarded off?
- Cotton Top Tamarins were out and using their outside climbing trees, which is unusual for them
- Spotted all 4 Siamang across the 2 exhibits/exhibit and offshow housing
- New Red Panda exhibit seems to be progressing very nicely and no signs of work - it might be finished?
- Only 1 addax in the Aridlands today, I did however notice one in the distance behind the old Blesbok exhibit
- Coati Roundabout has been entirely removed, just rubble and plants left
- Old Cheetah Rock was blocked off again (I feel like this should really be revitalised for another species!!
- Door to the old Rhino house was open and I could see something moving around inside
- Spotted both Potoroo for first time - have not seen the Swift Parrot in a year but is still signposted!
- After conversations yesterday I took time to actually look at Black Swan Pond - it is larger than I remembered!!

Overall, Marwell looks pretty bleak and empty in the rain - there is need for more species and bigger groups as has already been noted!
I think you meant Lesser Kudu in with the Bongo, the one Addax in Aridlands male born at Marwell is due to leave, the adult pair will then go back to Aridlands of show as you say at the moment hopefully then another female is due to arrive.

I believe the mature male, along with a younger male, were moved to an enclosure across the South Road from the Macacque Island. They're not officially on show, but they can be seen behind the red-painted building.

That actually used to be the sitatunga enclosure before they moved and it became an off show area. The paddock area was about double the size when it was an on show exhibit.

It all looked lovely on a beautiful day on Thursday, but that still couldn't make up for the tiny groups of so many species! So there is a pair of Addax offshow, I thought I saw one in the distance. Saw three or four Warty pigs.

Yes, I did mean the Lesser Kudu! Glad to hear there are plans for the Addax - it would be nice to establish a large herd (numbered 5 at my last visit, with I belive 2 leaving for BZP, but would like to see more especially with, from what I understand, no plans to breed the Dorcas Gazelle)

Glad to hear the trio of Warty Pigs are still around aswell.

A few notes from a visit today:
  • Both potoroos were out. I was able to see a leg peeking out from the female's pouch. The male seemed keen to try for another joey...
  • Bellatrix, the binturong, was surprisingly active, walking around her outdoor and indoor enclosures, which was exciting to see from a regular no-show. The male was in his usual spot, just about visible in his indoor area.
  • I could only see 0.4 Grevy's zebras; I'm sure there's normally five (I could be wrong, though!).
    • However, I spotted a male Grevy's off show in the paddock to the right of the main Przewalski's horse paddock (African Valley behind Cafe Graze). I've never seen him before, and can't find any mention of him arriving on Marwell's social media or here on ZooChat. The 2024 stocklist shows a 1.0 disposition and a 1.0 acquisition. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be very grateful!
    • Relatedly, I could only see three larger red river hogs instead of the usual five. Again, if anyone has any info, I'd be really interested.
  • The male sitatungas are still off show in the paddock opposite Eco Island.
  • There looks to be the beginnings of a new building at Eco Island, situated behind the toilet block on a backfilled area of the moat. This will presumably be the indoor area for the red river hogs; it looks like it'll have 3-4 bedrooms. The siamangs in the macaque house were very vocal about the building work.
  • Zaya and Warjun spent lots of time together today. My fingers are crossed that the carnivore team will receive some good news this year.
  • Much of the aquatic plants have been removed from the asian short-clawed otters' water area, giving them much more swimming space.
  • The new red panda exhibit looks finished, as far as I can tell. As brilliant as it looks, I do worry that Tashi and Cherry will be hard to spot amongst the various trees, bushes and rocks from the limited viewing areas.
  • The renovation of Pasha's pool and waterfall is all done. It looks far deeper than before, so hopefully, he gets some good use out of it.
  • The Okapi House (on the left, with your back to Pasha) is still closed. Does anyone know why?
  • The bongos had access to the lesser kudu paddock. There's a temporary fence around the oak tree, presumably to stop them eating the acorns.
  • The banteng herd looks superb, now at ten head. It's nice to see such a large ungulate group at Marwell!
  • The coati roundabout shows no progress since the wall was demolished a few weeks ago.

Two Red River Hogs born at Marwell have left leaving adult pair and youngster who will move into the former macaque area, the former coati area will become a garden, only one of the Red Pandas will move into the former Clouded Leopard area, and there is some good news to come from the Okapi house soon.

Thanks for your reply. Why only one red panda in the new exhibit, though?

Does anyone know what the current number/group of Sitatunga are at Marwell? How many males are leaving and will there still be a breeding group remaining?

I believe I do recall seeing and noticing that individual when I was looking over The Valley on my visit in April, while photos on my phone show 4 zebra in Wild Explorers, so it seems he has been there at least more than 5 months. I unfortunately do not have any information further than this though.

I recall in 2021 I saw a zebra off-show in the paddock you described...guessing it was a male but not sure if it was the same zebra

Maybe it could be that the male zebra lives separate from females outside of breeding?

A male Grevys arrived in 2022 from Chessington, he then left in 2024 for West Midland, meanwhile another male arrived from Holland in 2024 from Holland. he is the male now at Marwell.
Thank you for clarifying! Do you know where the female who was in Wild Explorers has moved to?

What species are Zaya, Warjun and Pasha?
