ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2025

The access via the Meet the Neighbours aviary to Gorrilas has been closed again so access is again by the entrance opposite Tiger exhibit.
The former Golden Headed Lion Tamamin enclosure in the Rainforest is currently empty and being renovated. ( the other golden Headed Lion Tamamin remain at large in the open Rainforest area).

The former is because the gorilla work finally started today, thank god. The latter is because the male tamarin that was kept in there (I can't remember his name unfortunately) was PTS so the female has been removed and the enclosure will be empty for the foreseeable future

I was reading a statement from David Field at Edinburgh Zoo in relation to all this, specifically with them trying to bring in two more Indian rhinos. But highlighting the problems more generally.
I just read that statement, and like I said the biggest problem is bluetongue not Brexit. It is the same moving between countries in the EU, they will each have their own guidelines.

Purple-naped lory family (4) are indeed now in the former rainbow lorikeet enclosure next to the Sumatran laughingthrush family (3). (Blackburn outer enclosures nearest to the lions)
The rainforest enclosure vacated by the GHL tamarin seems based upon the speed that it is being renovated seems likely to house a new species in a few weeks.

Newcomer here, decided I’d post an update on some things at the zoo since I happened to visit recently:

The Cassons are currently undergoing some maintenance work (on the outside at least), possibly related to the age of the structure? It’s still closed off to public access, but I heard from a worker that it might be open again at Christmas.

Accidentally made my way over to the North Bank via the old bridge. The gate was left wide open, and I thought the area was open again (wasn’t sure what I’d find, but wanted to see all the same).

It was pretty apparent it wasn’t though when I got there and saw that the remaining cages were in an advanced state of disrepair (of course they’re not in use so that’s understandable). One had half of the actual metal fencing on it, while another was completely open with a large succulent growing in it (both have the blue-green mosaic tiles in them).

There’s also a pretty old looking sculpture of some Ring-Tailed Lemurs left there, seems like it must be from the 80s or 90s? I did take some photos but my computer isn’t working right now, can’t get them off the SD card (I’m writing this on a phone).

The gate I entered through was closed when I went to leave, but I found a staff member soon after and it turned out they were still unlocked. They were also pretty understanding about it, I’m not really one to snoop so wouldn’t have gone there otherwise.

The Eagle Owl was acting a little strange, digging on the floor of its enclosure and repeatedly hooting. Asked one of the volunteers about it and they asked a keeper. It wasn’t the owls’ keeper though, so they couldn’t say exactly why it was doing it, only that it’s not unusual behaviour.

Also saw that they’re keeping their birds of prey (aside from owls) in the non-viewing aviary beside LotL, they’re just about visible from the circular section. Not sure if anyone has mentioned that here already?

That’s about all the news I have. It was a weekday, so I did find that some animals were more active/present than they are on the weekend. The ferrets never seemed to come out of their indoor section though, for the few hours I was there I visited them at the start and end of my visit.

Oh and I forgot to mention, but they still haven’t finished changing over that turtle display in the New Reptile House. Didn’t take a photo this time around, but had one from my last visit which looks the same, unfortunately it seems I can’t post media yet though :/

The maintenance is as far as I'm aware just general work in preparation for it being opened over Halloween and Christmas, as it's being used for events. During the summer it's been used as storage for the events on the lawn so the inside probably needs a bit of sprucing up too

Honestly that just sounds like him - he's a slightly strange boy but his preferred spot is digging next to the wall of the enclosure and shouting at anyone who walks past. I believe it's courtship behaviour in owls, and he goes through phases of doing it and then perching on one of the branches

They're brought out for displays a couple of times a week and kept there when they aren't being used - it's a buzzard and something else I can't quite remember, but I think they're both native. I got quite excited when I saw them thinking it was the black kite that had disappeared from the vulture aviary but unfortunately he was euthanised in August

Sounds like a lovely visit! Did you manage to see any of the new babies (langur, galago, otter, dik-dik)? It's a shame to hear about the state of the North Bank, it was rather overgrown last time I was over there but certainly it sounds like nature has entirely taken over now

I hadn’t heard about it being used for Halloween, perhaps that’s where the silent disco will be? All in all I’d love to see it just opened up in general, even without the smaller enclosures in the back it’s a really nice (and nostalgic) place for me :)

They’ve also mentioned something called a “Golden Pumpkin Hunt” on the website. Apparently you have to at least be a member to be eligible for finding it (it’s hidden somewhere in the zoo), it’s mentioned on the website but not the members update though o_O

Unfortunately never got to see the otters, which is a shame as I haven’t seen them underwater for years. Did manage to spot a dik-dik but pretty sure it’s an adult, they’re already quite small so.

I wasn’t looking out for the baby animals in particular, I did see plenty of the galagos though. The animals in the Nocturnal House (counting the upstairs ones too) are a lot more active than they are on the busier days, mainly since they’re being bothered a lot less by any excess noise.

I do think they maybe ought to add a mini partition where the Aye-Aye and Mouse Lemur are though, because the sound of the wooden exit door closing really reverberates through there. Even if it’s just those long plastic blinds it would help dampen the noise somewhat, although there’s a good reason why the exit door is so heavy/doesn’t have a dampener.

There’s a fairly reasonable risk of the lemurs getting out through there if the door didn’t close far enough. I know because on my visit prior to that, one of them nearly did. It slipped through the plastic strips and past the automatic sliding door when a family went through. Luckily, I saw and told the supervising keeper before anyone inadvertently let it out into the Clore Pavillion.

It’s also why it’s strictly a no-entry door from the Pavillion side, since it’s impossible to tell if a lemur is on the other side or not.

But Sly Lemurs aside, that area is all really well done overall. Perhaps they should change the settings on the automatic door to close sooner after it’s opened, but visitor safety could be why it doesn’t (in case it tried to close when someone is going through).

The behaviour of Max, the Eagle Owl is him preparing a scrape, a shallow depression for eggs.
Ferrets are always elusive although they are part of the display show on the lawn. Last week they were running about outside their enclosure

New Sengi (Elephant Shrew) species are now in this Rainforest enclosure. No signage currently to confirm which type but the colouration gives a clue. Two individuals currently separated.

Excellent news that they've finally arrived, it's a pair of Black-and-Rufous from Leipzig (1.1). Worth mentioning that a round-eared sengi is still set to arrive at some point, but to have any sengis return and such a unique species for a UK collection is very exciting

I am excited to see that finally London zoo get this Lesser known species, I am excited to see them on my next visit!
All being well they will be in the Rain Forest, near the fish tank. A male and female who have not met before, so fingers crossed they accept one another. Saw a photo on Google

Excellent news indeed - ideal species for London - small, interesting, charismatic, unusual and active.

Great news! Having seen the species at Antwerp just last week, I hope they aren't too shy for noisy London. The Antwerp pair were quite shy, and that was on a very quiet weekday. The Clore can get quite noisy, hopefully the Leipzig pair are more confident.

Excellent news, wasn’t too far off with the post below in the end then! Very much looking forward to going to see them - a really great addition, London seems to be consistently making the right sorts of decisions of late species-wise.

Are the exhibits to the left entering Rainforest Life still holding bokyboky? Had a random thought on those enclosures earlier today - as black and rufous sengi are spreading through Europe like wildfire of late, I think those specific exhibits would suit them nicely with a little bit more foliage - they're the right height with regards to visitors and size...
