South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes / Safari Zoo Closure

Seen as there is no longer a website or social media page I would suggest you email them directly as it would appear information on individuals is kept secret to South Lakes.
I have just found some new information in an old(er) file for the European giraffe population:

SLW/Cumbria Zoo had at the time:
M Tibor b. 10-11-2000 Praha hybrid rothschildi
F Balley Bogey b. 05-02-2006 Belfast hybrid generic
F? Dayo b. 17-07-2008 Paris Zoo antiquorum
F Katoum Les Sables d'Olonnes
F. Eloise Les Sables d'ozonnes
F. ???

@Embu, well you tell me ....
My suppositions:
M Tibor probably still alive
F Balley Bogey is probably no longer present or deceased (????)
F Dayo is actually M Ken'Dayo (???? - so deceased 2025)
F Katoum and F Eloise still present ...
A third unknown antiquorum F at SWL/Cumbria Zoo (????)

  • Tibor is dead but only in the last 5 years
  • They did receive a male called Beau who was born at Belfast 2006 but I vaguely remember someone in here saying he had died but again maybe only in the last 5ish years?
  • Dayo died this year?
  • They sent a (hybrid?) male called Sillian to Folly Farm, he died at Folly in 2021. He was born at Belfast I believe?
  • 0:1 called Eller/Ella was transferred to Noah's Ark back in 2022

Further information from 2015/16 ....!!! Two calves been born from the Kordofan giraffe breeding group:
M Melman b. 2015 Dayo x Eloise?
F no name b. 16/03/2016 Dayo x Katoumi
SOURCE: Rare giraffe born at South Lakes Safari Zoo

Additional questions:
M Melman what status ... Alive / Deceased and/or Transfer to ???? (Location where to)
F no name what status ... Alive / Deceased and how where and when next ????

IMO: Now, given that the Kordofan antiquorum giraffe were / are destined for France (it seems BIAZA / ABWAK have decided to focus on Nubian (former Rothschild's) Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi (pure-bred) and some Giraffa reticulata (pure-bred) ... I do find it a lame duck / ineffectual excuse to formulate that BREXIT and now Bluetongue are preventing export back to the European Continent.

The genetics of these Kordofan giraffe in the UK are much to valuable to the Kordofan EEP/EAZA population now to go to waste on an indefinite .... whereas on the European Continent there is / was available space to import / house the females ....! I wish, I do wish people directly and indirectly (hello DEFRA, Govt. and local Council and new past and present owners of SWZ / Cumbria Zoo (and now .... YWP????) would wise up a little better and take responsibility / accountability more personal then attribute these conveniently to external factors ...!

could monkey world not take baboons and lemurs depending on space

I was thinking the same thing, they have a huge newly built enclosure for Baboons sitting empty. (not sure if the intended rescue will ever go ahead)

Whilst this sounds a good idea on paper, it would probably require a large donation from South Lakes to have Monkey World take on the species and that isn't something I would imagine that South Lakes would be keen to do. Plus is rumours are true that YWP are going to be running the site and looking after the animals with a view to do something with the site, I would be surprised if there was desire for them to move those animals on anyway.

How of substance is this new rumour that YWP will take over the site.... They have done in the past and abandonned the idea following the in-fighting between erstwhile owner and the new Cumbria Zoo management.... and the Council getting all up!????

I wonder if YWP do take over the site, if they will send some of the animals over to their site, I suppose it depends on allot of things, but Im sure they could move something small over at least.

YWP were recently advertising on the BIAZA website for keepers to be based at South Lakes.
I would welcome some in-depth journalism and that it becomes public who is now in charge of South Lakes WAP/Cumbria Zoo cum next name for the original site. I do think this is all in the public interest to know and - honestly - I cannot live by rumours alone. This advertisement by YWP - can you signal to source? - may be an indication the parent company of YWP is involved... Just it would be good to have something more substantial on this as the original zoo location is now crumbling at base and with several animal species still in limbo and awaiting some action now to relocate or alternatively recreate a new zoo here.

I agree - I’ve contacted The Mail three times this year to try and encourage some journalism and not even had a reply. For a paper that used to run almost daily stories about the place, the lack of a single piece on the removal of the Facebook page to update the public on the animals remaining on site and the ongoing plans for the park seems odd.
