Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2025

Little bit of info from Paignton Zoo today.

PZ are gaining 4 of your Markhor and you are having 2 of our red river hogs shortly. :)

I could be wrong, but I think that Edinburgh only has four markhor. I wonder what will be replacing them if they are going to Paignton; they're a pretty nice species.
Edinburgh completely losing the markhor would be a shame, I've only seen them once and they are a lovely species. I might see if I can add Paignton to my shortlist of zoos to visit within the next couple of years.

Wondering if anyone’s heard about the capybara’s pregnancy since the AGM - she’d be due about now so guessing lack of info means it didn’t turn out?

They have quite a few at Highland don't they? So maybe they plan to split the herd at Highland, and keep some at Edinburgh. I appreciate they could just move from HWP to Edinburgh, but what if they have some who can't breed at HWP due to risk of inbreeding, but could breed at Edinburgh etc. Edinburgh haven't said anywhere that they are going out of the species, so they may just be moving some around.

I wonder if they'll even draw much attention the markhor if they are indeed leaving. They're not really a high-profile species, and I wouldn't be surprised if they leave the collection without much fanfare.

I'm a bit confused as to what you mean here; did you mean to say Paignton instead of Edinburgh?

I suggested some could move from HWP to Edinburgh so they don't go out species, and was trying to make a case for that etc, but was saying if HWP was moving some they could just move to Paignton leaving Edinburgh with their four, but I was hoping Edinburgh wont go out the species.

Visited the Zoo today don’t know when this enclosure opened but finally the old Zebra enclosure was open when I visited today. Currently just two Bactarian Camels in it atm the horses have not joined them don’t know if any more Camels will join them or any other animals still the same lay out as before apart from adding this small wooden shelter in this picture still a nice massive enclosure hopefully some more camels or other animals will join them in future. Ring tailed lemur enclosure was closed for essential maintenance aswell as the red river hog enclosure at the front don’t know if it’s because they are getting those new red river hogs to join them as per previous messages.

What sort of colouration was it?
To be honest it was hard to tell only got a glimpse of it at the fence with the horns behind the stables as there’s two enclosures right next to each other the new zebra one then the one right flush against it that’s got separate fencing looked a dark colour different from the one next to the horses I don’t know if they will share the enclosure or if it will be separate as there’s no path up to it and got limited viewing at the Zebras to go up and look

Could it be one of the nyalas?

Could it be one of the nyalas?
I just googled a male Nyala and it does look like that so looks like they’ve separated the male at the moment as it was a different colour from the ones in the enclosure next to the horses. Just thought it was a new one since I’ve not seen anything beside the new Zebra enclosure before and thought it might be new as they were talking about potentially new species of antelope joining once the horses move in beside the camels would like to see the Tapirs back or even Ostriches sharing an enclosure with the camels/zebra

Also one of the keepers was saying there’s no set date however all going well the 2nd sloth bear will be at the zoo before Christmas. They are currently been working on the other enclosure Cipsiek is in a different one to the one he was first in when he joined the zoo which you can now see into a good bit of it from the platform with the thatched roof at the new Bactarian camel enclosure when you walk along to the platform to the very end of it.

Hadn’t posted this before- the lemur walkthrough enclosure is getting work done on it, with new wood panel being put on all the sides and the lemur lookout part getting the wood replaced in it too, so the lemurs are being held in the off-show part at the top of the zoo for now, where the lynxes that are now at HWP were (you can still see them)

The zoo have just announced the arrival of 0.2 Highland cows, and there's a poll on their social media to decide what to name them, with the options being Heather and Bracken, Nessie and Thistle, Skye and Isla, or Kelpie and Selkie:

Edinburgh Zoo on Instagram: "Och aye the zoo, we’ve got Heilan coos! We recently welcomed this adorable pair of female Highland cows and we need YOUR help naming them Comment the emoji next to the names you think our newest additions should have: Heather and Bracken Nessie and Thistle ️ Skye and Isla Selkie and Kelpie"
Has anyone seen the enclosure yet according to the map they are in beside the horses if that’s true it makes sense for that to be a highland area. I wonder if that means the horses are not moving beside the camels and that they might put some other types of animals in at the top of the zoo beside them as it’s a big area. I just don’t think it would make sense to move horses beside camels and leave the highland cows in that big enclosure on their own especially with the zoo running out of real estate for new areas/enclosures for new animals.

Does anyone actually know if the sloth bears are on show, because based on their website I still cant work it out, and I can not find any images of their exhibit either.
