Dudley zoo now has a male asiatic lion from holland to join their female lion in the new lion enclosure. Does anyone have anymore info on the new arrival please post it on here :)

Thats brilliant news hopefully a small pride could be in the making as from what ive seen from the pictures the enclosure could definately hold a decent sized group of lions. :)

Possibly the Dudley female may be too old to breed from. I wonder if a younger lioness will be brought in for breeding as well?

Dont know how accurate it is but the local paper is claiming the male is there for breeding but heard it is very young so probably settling in the male before bringing in new blood...I hope this is the case

Are there any young Asian lions in the Uk which are looking for new homes. Maybe they could go to dudley as well.

This is all the information released

Lion Ridge, a one-acre site, believed to be one of the largest big cat enclosures in the UK has been designed solely in-house by zoo keeping staff.

Construction has taken eight months to complete with the design echoing visitors' requests to get closer to animals, with viewing areas and interpretation zones.

The state-of-the-art construction incorporates internal and external enclosures and has heated pads installed within the external paddock for the lions’ comfort.

The layout also incorporates a Listed Tecton Building, formerly the Tropical Birdhouse, designed by Berthold Lubetkin in 1937 when the Zoo opened.

Female lion Gir was moved into the new paddock two weeks ago and has settled in well. A new male lion, to replace her mate Max who died before Christmas, is being transferred to the zoo from a Dutch collection tomorrow.

Chief executive, Peter Suddock, said: “This part of the site was little used but developing it in this way makes superb use of the natural contours of the hill.

“We worked closely with English Heritage throughout all stages to ensure that the new enclosure was unobtrusive and complemented the Tropical Birdhouse.”

DZG has an excellent breeding record for Asiatic lions and has had six in eight years * they are highly endangered and now numbering fewer than 500 of which half are in collections across the world.

The new attraction is set to open at Easter.

They were doing succesfully but since some deaths breeing has not been as good as it was about 5 + years ago. Paigntons Breeding pair stopped because the female died. Chesters Zoo's unfortunate 3 litters with Asoka and Asha , Also the death of Cotswolds Male Sabu and his brother Bristols Chandra being recognised as having a low sperm count and Twycross' male going to Bristol to be paired with Moti so Twycross is left with no male.
Have Londons pair Lucifer and Abbi bred? I know that Abbis mum Ruchi did (who was Chesters Chandini's sister) Chandini was said to be the grandmother of the Asiatic Lion Breeding Programme!
So things sadly have halted but hopefully they will come back on track again once things are sorted out.
Im pretty sure the last cubs born where at Edinburgh? about 2 years or so ago.
Regards

I have just checked ISIS and they list births within the last 6 months for Helsinki , Mulhouse and Zurich . It also sounds as if Edinburgh might have more cubs .

it seems that breeding in the Uk has virtually ground to a halt at present. But that is probably a good thing with so many zoos holding pairs now. Once some of the older animals die off, there will be a chance at those zoos(e.g.Dudley, Bristol, Cotswold,London?) for breeding to resume again.

Re: Moti Twycross Zoo

So we know that the moving of Kamal to Bristol was just a publicity stunt then. Did the zoo not realise that a 14 year old lioness would be unable to breed? Even if she did concieve, it would have been unlikely she would have reared the cubs. A compatible pair was split up for no reason in that situation.

Kamal could have gone to the Cotswolds or Dudley in that case.
As for Londons pair, they shud have had a live litter by now, although i have my suspicions that Abi is infertile, 10 years old and no(surviving)litters, starting to ring alarm bells!

I believe it was only ascertained very recently that Moti will not breed anymore but of course they could have foreseen it would be unlikely at her advanced age.

Edinburgh Zoo's Lion House was recently closed as one of the females was giving birth ... not heard anymore about it but going there tomorrow so i will look for a keeper to ask

Thankyou for all of this info and shame about Moti, Lucifer and Abi did have cubs about 2/3 years ago but they didnt survivie by the looks of it.Other then that im not too sure.
Good news about Edinburghs Lions. :)

You guys and girls can now go to sleep without anguish .... (LOL)!!! The safaripark in Holland from where the media hoped our new male lion came from is actually .... right in Belgium (you wonderful cartographers of the deformed brain cell)!

Male Itar was in fact born at Planckendael Zoo along with brother Iblis and sister Ishara on 21/1/2008.

Well go figure that one out ....ay!!!
