Speculative Zoo Species List Help

Ideas for birds that could be mixed with bowerbirds (Fawn-breasted and Flamed)?
They can be mixed with many birds in large settings like at the Natural Aquarium's Australia Wild Extremes. Includes; peaceful ducks, crowned pigeon, white collared kingfisher, imperial pigeon, collared finchbill, starlings, woodswallow, masked lapwings, laughingthrush, honeyeaters, bulbul, parrots, golden-crested myna, etc.

I have these main sections;
  • Dia De Los Muertos diurnal section
  • Halloween spooky section (mostly nocturnal)
  • Greenhouse with butterflies & marigolds
  • Outdoor area

Here are some ideas for each section.

For the Dia de Los Muertos section, I’d recommend species native to central Mexico, particularly those that have a “spooky” appearance. I’d recommend that this section is nocturnal-themed, with cultural exhibits such as pieces on offrendas and the like, with glowing candles illuminating visitor walkways.
Ringtail- (Bassariscus astutus)
Vampire bat
Mojave rattlesnake
Pueblan milksnake
Nelson’s milksnake
Mexican beaded lizard
Mexican red-kneed tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii)

For the “generic Halloween section”, here are some ideas of “spooky” animals that are primarily nocturnal.
Virginia opossum
Vampire bat (again)
Seba’s short-tailed bat
Straw-coloured fruit bat
Egyptian fruit bat
Mohol bushbaby
Striped skunk
Black domestic cat

Red-eyed crocodile skink
Gargoyle gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus)
Blood python (Python brongersmai)
White-lipped pit viper- (Trimeresurus insularis)

Tawny frogmouth
Eurasian eagle owl
Eastern screech owl

Smoky jungle frog
Suriname horned frog

Mexican blind cave tetra- (Astyanax mexicanus)

Costa Rican striped-knee tarantula- (Aphonopelma seemani)
Southern black widow
Arizona bark scorpion
Ghost mantis
Blue-death feigning beetle
Giant cave cockroach- (Blaberus giganteus)

Same Zoo, different exhibit. WHats the best animals for a not so scary Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos temporary exhibit
Here are some more:

Halloween:
  • Halloween crab
  • Pumpkin toadlet
  • Cane toad
  • Any spider crab
  • Any tarantula
  • Crocodile monitor (due to coloration)

Dia de los Muertos:

  • Mexican giant musk turtle
  • Chiapas giant musk turtle
  • Any Agalychnis leaf frog
  • Mexican mole lizard
  • Axolotl
  • Sonoran boa
  • Any Abronia alligator lizard (especially graminea)

I have a couple more;
  • East and South African kopjes, specifically small animals that could be kept in indoor enclosures
  • South African deserts animals for nocturnal section and conservation priority small animals for indoor section (like Bronx Zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest terrarium area)
  • Hippo House indoor animals from African freshwater like great lakes, okavango delta, congo river, zambezi river, nile river, lake chad, west african mangroves, Great rift valley, etc.
  • Seasonal winter-themed exhibit (like Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, New Year, etc.). It has the following spaces; outdoor aviary that used to have black vultures & ravens, indoor enclosures (both large & small), "greenhouse" with open-topped aquarium & free-roaming species & former macaw aviary & former open-topped iguana enclosure, and outdoor aviary that used to have barn owl. One important thing to know is that the zoo is in Las Vegas
  • Animals for "Crossroads" exhibit focusing on arid north africa & middle east
  • Animals in "Sloth Bear Forest" exhibit focusing on Deccan Plateau, Indian deserts, and other arid South Asian places (not mangroves)

Would it be a bit odd to have a Tasman Sea–themed tank featuring the sand tiger shark as the main species?
Would that be like having gorillas in an African savanna exhibit?

It would be odd as they don't occur naturally there (they are in warmer regions). There's no point in having a Tasman Sea exhibit if you aren't even starring a native animal

@MOG2012 at least, for the following categories, I have a few suggestions for you:

East and South African kopjes, specifically small animals that could be kept in indoor enclosures
  • Common Dwarf Mongoose

  • Warren’s Girdled Lizard (Smaug warreni)
  • Rock Monitor (Varanus albigularis ssp.)
  • Giant Plated Lizard (Matobosaurus validus)
  • Mozambique Girdled Lizard (Smaug mossambicus)
  • Peter’s Rock Agama (Agama agama)

South African deserts animals for nocturnal section and conservation priority small animals for indoor section
  • Springhaas / Springhare

  • Common Leopard Gecko

Hope that most of these will be helpful, not just for your respective thread; but for future projects for other members as well.

Do you have Ideas for an outdoor Pantanal aviary mainly housing perching and other smaller birds?
Main species in this aviary would be the Brazilian Merganser. Other inhabitants would be Blue-crowned Motmot, Epaulet Oriole and Great Kiskadee.

Sunbittern, wattled jacana

Great kiskadee would make it a bit risky for smaller perching birds I'd think.

Southern screamer
Two or three of a huge list of available ducks (Fulvous/Black-bellied/White-faced whistling duck, Argentine ruddy duck, Brazilian/Ringed/Silver teal, Red shoveler, Rosy-billed pochard, and a few others)
Sunbittern
Giant wood-rail
Southern lapwing
Buff-necked ibis
Roseate spoonbill
Chaco chachalaca
Tataupa tinamou
Blue ground-dove

Without Kiskadee you could also include:
Hooded siskin
Ultramarine grosbeak
Red-crested cardinal
Yellow cardinal
Scarlet-headed blackbird
Blue-backed grassquit

You could also hold Red- or Yellow-footed tortoises here

Interesting choice of the mergansers for a Pantanal aviary, as the species isn't found on said biome. About the other species, the rest should work fine, although the kiskadees could represent a risk for bird chicks, if there's the intention of breeding.

Other species that could work out (on the smaller side) are Sunbitterns, Nanday parakeets, Hooded siskins and Southern lapwings. On the somewhat larger size, I'd go with Brazilian teal, Chaco chachalacas and Buff-necked ibises.

Good point so the geographical theme will be the Cerrados, where all current birds seem to live (according avibase) there.
So the current species lineup is:
Tataupa Tinamou
Brazilian Merganser
Rosy-billed Pochard
Picazuro Pigeon
Spot-winged Pigeon (don’t think there’s a risk of hybridisation; Walsrode keeps three Patagioenas in one aviary that’s smaller than that one would be)
Sunbittern
Blue-crowned Motmot
Great Kiskadee
Epaulet Oriole
Scarlet-headed Blackbird
Yellow-rumped Cacique
Red-footed Tortoise
Thanks for the help

Interesting lineups! Do you mind if I suggest you on some species for a Cerrado aviary? The speculative zoo that I'm building is focused on the biome and its fauna, so I can share some of the ones I've picked for my own aviaries.

Of course:)
There’re some aviaries around this aviary so maybe I’ll find some inspiration;)

Considering that you want smaller birds, with the mergansers being the main species, here's my suggestions:

Saffron finch
Picazuro pigeon
Ruddy ground-dove
Great kiskadee (albeit risky)
Chopi blackbird (albeit risky)
Guira cuckoo (albeit risky)
Rufous-bellied thrush
Tataupa tinamou
Red-winged tinamou
Southern lapwing
Yellow-chevroned parakeet
White-faced whistling duck
Western cattle egret

As for other species, but on a larger size, I'd recommend Red-footed tortoises, Geoffroy's side-necked turtles, Azara's agouti and Buff-necked ibises. Your suggestions are cool, but only very few of the birds that you listed actually live on the Cerrado. Most of them are either native to the Amazon, Patagonia or the Pampas (which is a different biome, a lot of people and zoos mix them up), and in the case of the motmot, not even native to South Amerca ;)

That’s a little complicated, as it’s not clearly if there‘re Amazonas Motmots or Blue-crowned Motmots in Europe and ZTl lists the European ones as Blue-crowned Motmots with the Amazonas Motmot‘s Latin name so I mixed them up at some point:confused:

The Yellow-rumped Caciques are one of those, right?
May I ask what’re the other ones?

Yes, the Caciques are indeed one of them. The other ones would be the Scarlet-headed blackbird, Sunbittern, Epaulet oriole and the Blue-crowned Motmot (if it is the Amazonian Motmot the species you're looking for, they're indeed found on parts of the Cerrado). The pochard and Spot-winged pigeon can be found on tiny fragments of the biome, based on what I could find, but most of their distribution is found outside the biome, so I wouldn't count them as well.

Ah, and a small correction to my list: I forgot that there's a risk of the agoutis preying on eggs that might be layed on the ground, so if you plan on breeding the birds, specially the mergansers, remove the agoutis from the mix (if you decide to keep them, of course).

Specifically, I'm looking for;
  • The exhibit is in Las Vegas but seasonal, focusing on winter holidays
  • Focuses are on Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, New Year, Lunar New Year, etc.
  • It has two aviaries (one used to have ravens & vultures, the other used to have barn owls)
  • Indoor enclosures varying in size
  • Greenhouse with open-topped cichlid aquarium, former macaw aviary, former iguana enclosure, and free-roaming species
