Speculative Zoo Species List Help

Mediterranean Sea & Island Exhibit;
  • Small to semi-large, some community/mixed & single-species tanks (ie. common octopus)
  • Island enclosures like Mediterranean house gecko
  • Coastal aviary with white-headed duck (not flamingos, pelicans, etc.)
  • The animals should be able to be found in American or be easily accessible in captivity

Mediterranean monk seals would be nice as well absolute steal (It would be sick to name a pair Harry and Agganis lol)

Are you aware of any species that are urgently in need of a new holding institution within EAZA zoos ?
If a new zoo were to open and choose its exhibited species to support EEP/ESB priorities, which species/sub-species would you think it prioritise ?

I guess most of the species that need more holdings are larger mammals species, but I’m also interested if you are aware of smaller mammals, birds, or herps that might similarly benefit from a new holding.

Thanks in advance !

Do you have any ideas for birds that can live along with Oriental Bay Owl and Javan Brown Wood Owl?
They shouldn’t breed

Any ideas for a caves nocturnal exhibit. The areas covered are;

It’s a stretch to find any animals that live exclusively in caves that are nocturnal and also available for zoos, but here’s a small list of nocturnal species from the aforementioned areas that can be found in caves during the day-

Southwest:
Ringtail
Bobcat
Gray fox
Great horned owl
Gila monster
Banded rock rattlesnake
Black-tailed rattlesnake

Caribbean:
Jamaican fruit bat
Jamaican boa

Western/Central Africa:
Egyptian fruit bat
Straw-coloured fruit bat
Central African rock python

Planning a small exhibition on animals used for human care. We've got Doctor fish (Garra rufa), known for cleaning skin cells and debris off your body. And Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) used for reducing inflammation and swelling, and increasing blood flow.

The area has a West Asian / Mediterranean theme but it's not super strict geographically for this

Cool idea! Don't know if they would work alongise the other species you listed, but another species for this could be Nile tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus)! Their skin can be used as bandages on the treatment of second and third degree burns, and scientists have been analizing the potential of using it in other areas of medicine.

  • Western Honeybee (used in apitherapy and antimicrobial wound dressings)
  • Various snail species due to their mucin used in cosmetics
  • Dromedary camels - Milk and other products are used as traditional medicine for gut/immune health

The exhibit is 3 months long (seasonal). There will be 3 different themes for each enclosure (so 3 different mixes) - winter (general winter holidays, Holarctic), spring (theme is biodiversity, mainly behind the scenes conservation), summer (theme is pride so LGBTQ+ animals + rainbow animals);
  • 11 Aquarium/Paludarium/Terrarium space - 432 litres, 504 litres, 675 litres, 735 litres, 896 litres, 900 litres, 2592 litres, 2700 litres x2, 63000 litres, 85750 litres
  • 3 Indoor Enclosures - 70 sq. m, 78 sq. m, 90 sq. m
  • 780 sq. m large greenhouse (so free-roamers) with 3 enclosures - 70 sq. m open-topped enclosure, 6000 litre open-topped aquarium, and 180 sq. m large aviary.

I would add at least one venomous animal, like Echis sp. as an example where a medicine was developed with help of the venom of the snake.

Since posting I've also added rats (can detect diseases), ants (can detect diabetes), Greenbottle fly (maggots are used to clean wounds), Saw-scaled viper and a scorpion species for the reason you mentioned

You may add Naked Mole Rats (because of their numerous biological spécificités), Spiders (for the medicinal use of the venoms) and even Cockroaches (they produce natural antibiotics).

Toucans can be held with a large variety of animals. For birds, Seriemas, Macaws, Amazons, Conures, Flamingos, Ibises and Tinamous can work (just need to take care in case of eggs and chicks for the macaws, conures and amazons). In the case of mammals, anything about the size of an agouti or larger can work (except for primates and carnivores, of course), and as for reptiles, Iguanas, Tortoises and Turtles can work (except for Iguana younglings).

So far I know that mixes don’t work, because each one side kills the other side (macaws kill toucans and toucans kill macaws, amazones and conures)
They can, actually. Quite a lot of zoos in Brazil do these mixes, and without any problems.
