Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Nagoya - Higashiyama Zoo

Whoops, wrong gorilla. Annie is the gorilla getting sent to Ueno Zoo.
Seems a logical move to get F Ai to rebreed with M Shabani.

I wonder what will happen with M offspring Kiyomasa (b. November 2012 to F Nene - now maintained alone).

An innovative method for funding new exhibits!

I will look with some interest if this model of investment will catch on in Japan in future at other zoos using the same funding mechanism.

The zoo published the fourth part of its masterplan slated to be accomplished in 2029. The plan consists of the previously mentioned Malayan tapir, Komodo dragon enclosure and the Himalayan complex. Unfortunately, it seems like the Himalayan complex will consist only of Pall’s cats and snow leopards. I did not see any mention of any other species.

The plan also consists of a Savannah area which four species are planned to be exhibited; lion, giraffe, zebra, and hippopotamus.

I also saw this picture posted on twitter:

I have a few bones to pick with this, and it’s not even the limited amount of species the zoo plans for this area. First of all I do not understand why the zebras and giraffes are separated. It’s not like there are any plans to introduce a small ungulate that the zebras would harass the death, so I don’t understand why both species shouldn’t have a larger combined exhibit. The second problem I have is the plan to offer the hippopotamus pond as a part of the zebra and giraffe enclosures. Unless the zoo plans to drop butt-loads of money to have the most efficient filtration system, I think giving drinking access to the giraffe and zebra to this pond will result in a huge medical fiasco.

Interesting statement that giving ungulates access to a hippo pond would lead to medical issues.

It sounds probable, but there are quite a few zoo’s already where this is happening (cologne, beekse bergen, jerusalem and basically most of africa spring to mind) and as far as I know it causes no problem? Does anyone know if it could?

So the only Small Indian civets remaining in Japan now are privately kept individuals?
I'm not sure if there are any other animals left in Japan at this point.
However, I have seen information online in the past years that some animals are in private hands, including an animal cafe.

This page is a bit old (from 2017), but it shows an animal in a cafe.

Are there any other instances of privately held individuals besides the pet cafe that you know of?

Hi

I've heard of certain animal traders and pet shops claiming to have this species in the past few years, but I have not seen the actual animal, and there is almost no information online. It could be a misidentified animal, or simply hiding information for some reason.
