Im taking my two goddaughters to the zoo on sunday and was wondering if anybody knew the animals names and how i could tell them apart as the girls like to know the names of the name (just incase there is any confusion i mean animal names not species name e.g asoka the lion)

Most of the popular exhibits have the animals names on signs (e.g. elephants, giraffes, chimps, lions).

Sumatran Orangs are:
Puluh - mature male
Padang - young adult male
Emma - adult female
Subis - adult female
Budi - Juvenile
Utara - Juvenile
Indah - baby
Kirana - baby

Bornean Orangs:
Tuan - mature male
Martha - old female
Leia - adult female
Sarikei - adult female
Donna - adult female (recent arrival and I think is still in quarantine)

thanks Jimmy is there a way of telling them apart?

are the sumartran orangs the ones in the first enclosure as you walk into RORA? or are they all mixed?

It's Jimmy;)

Apart from the ones i've told you already (Puluh being mature etc), Indah is bigger than Kirana and Emma has a slightly rounder face than Subis, however, unless you've seen them enough it can be hard to tell the difference between Budi and Utara.

Couldn't tell you about the difference between Bornean females

The Sumatrans occupy the indoor RORA enclosures and the outdoor enclosures at the back and side of the Orang house. The Borneans have the netted RORA enclosures and the old Orang house (so the Borneans theoretically are the first and last ones you see in RORA).

im surprised that they havnt signposted the enclosures telling you who is in which one. is the old orang house just used for quarantine? do you think part of the wooden fence with be eventually removed so you can see the outdoor section of the old house as the orangs are sometimes outthere but difficult to see due to the fence apoligies again Jimmy for the name mistake have corrected it now :P

The old Orang house acts as quarantine quarters and as indoor accomodation for the Borneans.

The Borneans as a group are never out on the old island. It used to be the home of the seperated male, Sibu (who appears to have died according to another thread). I doubt the wooden fence will be removed as that entire building is meant to be "off-show".

Okapi's are Mbuti (male) & Stuma (Female)

Indian Rhino's Patna (male) & Batschii (female)

Black Rhino:

Magadi (in old house)
Ema (in old house)
Rosie (in off-show)
Manyara (in Tsavo)
Kitani (in Tsavo)
Sammy (in the off-show)
Asani (baby in Tsavo)
Malindi (in the off-show)

Komodo Dragons:

Norman and Flora are the adults I think

when we went a couple of weeks ago we saw one of the orangs on the climbing frame in the old enclosure as it was quite high up, not sure which one it was though i posted a pic into the gallery.

is there a way of seeing the rhino that are in the old house? also why are some of them off-show?

You can't see the Rhino in the old house, but you may catch a glimpse if they go into their paddock though.

It is technically possible to see the off-show rhinos. You may be lucky enough to spot them behind the meerkat statue and beyond the hedge or you could see them as you are entering and exiting the zoo (they are in the grass paddock that you see as you enter the car park)

The animals are off-show to give privacy and there is possibly not enough space in the on-show areas.

That is Sibu, who may have died

Are there now only 2 komodos? I thought there were Norman, Nessie and Flora.

Also in Islands in Danger are 3 male red birds of paradise. Jackson is the human imprinted one who likes to hang off the aviary mesh upside down and flirt. Another is Gold Medal, and I can't remember the name of the third, but they're very American themed names.
