Female Cheetah arrives:

Rare female cheetah arrives at Edinburgh Zoo

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has welcomed four-year-old female cheetah Domino to Edinburgh Zoo from Zoo de Cerza, France.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity will soon start to introduce Domino to the zoo's male cheetah, Billy.
Great news does anyone know if she is sharing an enclosure with Billy or has a separate one elsewhere in the zoo if so where is it? as I only remember seeing one big area and one indoor part in the one Billy is in atm and I know usually male and female cheetahs live in solitary in separate enclosures till breeding time

The zoo have emailed patrons with an update:

"We are sad to share the news that Kalari, our eldest koala, has been put to sleep following a period of deteriorating health and the discovery of mass on her kidney. Kalari was a visitor and keeper favourite. She was born at the zoo in 2018 and then went on to be a mother to two joeys – Dameeli and Myaree."

So that means none of the koalas I saw on my visit in 2016 are still alive?
News to me

I agree I don’t remember seeing any separation areas or secondary paddocks or houses so I’d imagine elsewhere in the zoo?

I seem to remember there are small offshow additional areas for the cheetah enclosure. I imagine they'll have to rotate access to the main paddock.

Visited the zoo today noticed that the two new red river hogs have now been added with the existing two to bring the total number up to 4 however the two existing and two new arrivals kept separate. Also noticed that the original horses enclosure instead of the one big enclosure they have halfed it to keep the new highland cows and them separated. Indoor bintorong enclosure closed with blinds shut and indoor access shut between outdoor and indoor enclosure but according to the website there’s now a female that’s joined the existing male couldn’t spot them in the outdoor enclosure. Also indoor cheetah enclosure completely shut off from the public could not spot either in the one outdoor enclosure. Still just the camels in the new camel enclosure at the top of the zoo. Overhead a keeper who had a private tour group say the male capybara is trying hard to mate with the two females and they are hopeful for baby’s in the future.

Thousands of 'glow-in-the-dark' snails have been reintroduced to French Polynesia as part of global conservation programme to save the snails from the brink of extinction.

The annual reintroduction of zoo-bred Extinct in the Wild and Critically Endangered Partula snails saw over 7,000 snails returned to four islands, making it the largest release of the group of finger-nail sized snail species and subspecies to date:

Over 7,000 ‘glow-in-the-dark' snails return to island homes

Recently the zoo have been doing "Animal of the Month" fan polls on their Instagram, and one of the options for this month is the axolotl that's been off-show for a long time (the post wasn't clear whether or not he's still off-show). It turns out his name is "Toothless", which I think is very cute. The other options on the poll are Danling the goral, Honshu the macaque and Lucy the chimpanzee, and by the time I looked Toothless was winning with 35% of the vote.

Just been reading an article in the Guardian newspaper about David Field becoming the new President of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I read the piece and he talks in quite generalised terms mostly. But there are some comments about Polar Bears I found interesting, about the'new' enclosures being set up in the UK (meaning Yorkshire and Jimmy's Farm) and expressing some concern about those in the 'south' with reference to the 'heat'. That bit can only refer to Jimmy's Farm I think.

I was thinking he was referring to Jimmy's Farm aswell. I also noted that he thought that the Gentoo Penguins at the London Aquarium, their veterinary and psychological needs are catered for but as they came from Edinburgh, he could hardly say anything different. I wonder how many zoos are looking over their shoulders after his comments about zoos in the uk he would like see closed.

Can't disagree, as I advocate for fewer, larger, more focused, collections rather than many 'hobby' collections with the same old motley sheds with meerkat, llama, etc which have little to no conservation or financial benefit.

The most recent Edinburgh Zoo Animal Inventory gives the following counts as at 31st December 2024 (although, of course, the figures are nearly a year old).

king penguin: 5.0.0
Gentoo penguin: 52.63.0
northern rockhopper penguin: 14.17.0
Ah, @Tim thanks ..., I am guessing that the king penguins are just a bachelor group. Not to be too greedy..., any further data on annual breeding in the Gentoo and rockhopper colonies (preferably through the last few years and birds sent out ... et cetera)!!! ;)

TBH: This reserves a separate thread on penguins in Europe / UK or as per species.
