The WCS Five Park Living Institutions Master Plan:
The Wildlife Conservation Society is currently in a planning process that addresses the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and Prospect Park Zoo. The result will be a series of site-specific master plans that connect our visitors to the WCS mission of saving wildlife and wild places by connecting people to nature in our N.Y. parks. This plan is a continuing effort of the past few years during which we have restored Astor Court, renovated and re-opened the Lion House (now the home of Madagascar!), and built Tiger Mountain at the Bronx Zoo; and at the New York Aquarium, we have opened our Alien Stingers and Glover's Reef exhibits.
The planning process is taking into consideration the needs of our animals, existing infrastructure, and a focus on the guest experience that delivers an educational message and a fun and memorable family experience. We hope to implement our priority projects within 5-7 years; dependent on funding. These projects include renewing infrastructure as well as replacing older buildings with new exhibits. At the Bronx Zoo, a number of older areas are being considered for modification such as the World of Darkness, the Rare Animal Range, and the exhibits of Arabian Oryx and Blesbok in the southeastern corner of the zoo. In the coming years, it is hoped that a new and exciting Children’s Safari will be built in that southeastern corner. In the immediate future, we will be opening exhibits with hyenas and aardvarks in the Bronx and snow leopards in Central Park. As improvements are made in our parks, we will remain committed to the highest quality of care for our wildlife and continue to provide a first-class guest experience.
