Chester Zoo Members Day News Snippets

Sorry for the bird-centric focus!

- Eurasian Black Vultures are sitting on a new egg. The first was taken for incubation but proved not to be fertile. The male is getting on a bit and has a touch of arthritis, so the keepers think he may not be treading the female properly, which is why the eggs aren't fertile
- Griffon Vultures have no eggs yet, but the male is only 4 and may still be too young
- 3 nests with Waldrapp's Ibis chicks
- The Choughs had eggs, but they were found broken. I hope they have another clutch.
- An enterprising Whistling Duck has built its nest into the structure of the Black Vultures' nest!
- The Red-Billed Blue Pies have moved into the old Spectacled Owl aviary opposite the Wildlife Garden. They had their first egg within about 10 days of meeting (must've been a shotgun wedding!). The first egg disappeared, but the female appears to be sitting again.
- Our favourite Azure-Winged Magpie has a mate from the aviary by the Elephant House and seems to be getting OK with him, despite her having been previously kicked out of the flock for bad behaviour.
- The off-show pair of Tawny Frogmouths have 1 chick, and the on-show pair are sitting on 4 eggs! There is some discussion about whether to hand-rear 2 of those if all 4 hatch as it'll be their first clutch, and 4 is quite a beakful.
- The lone Grey, Milky and Barn owls are going elsewhere. Hawk Owls may be coming to replace them, but most likely not until after the summer.
- The Grey Owl pair are indulging in some very sweet mutual preening. Even though the male's only a year old, fingers crossed for successful breeding!
- Jackson the Red Bird of Paradise is moulting and looks DREADFUL!
- The other male RBoPs were unexpectedly friendly, all coming to the aviary mesh. Must be a spring thing...
- Female RBoP is in a partitioned-off section at the back of the RBoP aviary. Males not yet showing much interest, but again fingers crossed.

Elephant news:
- Birma has settled well into her new home (See Birma thread)
- Sithami confirmed pregnant, Jangoli almost certainly also pregnant, but not far enough along for lab confirmation. Thi mated last week.
- Nurnberg are getting 2 elephants, including one from Chester. Probably Tunga, since a deal has been done to relocate him, and negotiatons are going on to place Raman. It'll be a shame to see the group of 3 playful youngsters broken up, but I suppose it's necessary to allow the next generation to come along.
- Jangoli's tail used to be manipulated and have cream applied when there was a hands-on system of elephant keeping. Since the protected contact scheme was put in place, that hasn't been possible, which led to her kinked tail atrophying and dying off. She has since been trained to present her tail to the keepers for it to be cleaned and dressed.

I think that's it...!

Great news for the Elephants, any chance you were talking to Mick around 12:30 today?

Erm... I honestly can't remember what time it was, but it could have been. Did you spot someone looking suspicious? :D we were there around the time the presenter talk was happening.

On my way out I passed a couple talking to Mick and I heard pregnancy and "the levels have returned back to a normal state of pregnancy"

That probably was us then. Mick was talking about Jangoli's hormones going haywire with the stress of losing her tail-end, but returning back to normal now.

The bush dog move is only temporary, 0.2 from Germany are being quarantined in the small enclosure, after quarantine they will be moved back to the pudu enclosure, the pudu should be going in with the spider monekys. One of the bush dogs is believed to be pregnant.

0.1 Cheetah due on 28th April, and 0.1 expected from Whipsnade in exchange for 1.0

There has been no progress on obtaining a male okapi. Chester has the option of a male on loan from Marwell or from another (unknown to me) collection. Or possible a straight exchange of males.

Did you inquire why they have not attempted with Mbuti again?

Taun, no I never got the chance to ask. But Stuma is being very awkward which might be why.

Gigit, I found an ape section keeper but she was not very forthcoming, all I was told was that no Borneans are pregnant and the zoo holds 1.3

The zoo was very busy yesterday and RoRA was crowded, as usual. I attempted to ask at the chimp talk but I could not get anywhere near the keeper.

Did none of you manage to track down an orang keeper to ask about Sibu?

I didn't stay long enough and could not see either male in the morning but did glimps two of the bornean females who where very active

All we need to do is establish whether Tuan is still alive(or Sibu) and it will prove which male has died .;)

Their website info states the only male is Tuan, plus the 4 females mentioned by C Z Jimmy.

Good point, something seems to be covered up here.

I don't understand why zoos are sometimes secretive. We all know that animals die. If they announce it, you can accept it ('these things happen' as a Paignton zoo official said to me once). When they are not open about it, you become suspicious.

Yes, I agree and have always felt that. But sometimes I can see why they hush things up to prevent bad publicity- such as a sudden spate of animal deaths.

Victor the giraffe that collapsed at Marwell in the 1970's was a case in point- the world press portrayed it all in a very sympathetic light but how would they have reported the chance and totally unrelated death of another giraffe the day after Victor? That's what happened but it was hushed up of course.

When Blackpool lost three Apes within about a week some years ago, all of them to totally unrelated causes, there was a general 'hue and cry' over it and complaints over the running of the zoo.

At Chester, either Sibu and Dona(or another female?) have both died resulting in a 'news blackout', or they really have been paired up and/or sent to another zoo, but I don't know where yet.

"To lose one orangutan may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose both looks like carelessness" ;)
I've just had a look at the Twycross 'Orangutans' thread to confirm that a Zoochatter from Dvur Kralova says Dona was sent to Chester to pair up with Kevin from Berlin, rather than Sibu.
