Chester Zoo New species at Chester

Will the addax be on their own then?
What is happening about the white crested turacos?

Just checked on ISIS, Chester now has the only pair of mauritius Kestral in ISIS registered zoos. Whether they'll breed or not is a mystery.

Bongorob, You have mentioned, about the verminculated fishing owl being the only known member of it's species in zoos until 2006, Which other zoos hold it?
 
I expect the Addax will be on their own at first. (if they ever come to Chester).

The only other collection exhibiting Vermiculated Fishing Owls is Parc Paradisio, Cambron, Belgium. They have 6. Chester's female, called Bruno has been in captivity since 1970. She flew on board a ship bound for Liverpool and was presented to the zoo. As far back as 1986 the zoo management thought she was on her last legs. Efforts were made to obtain a male, to no avail. There was a rumour a male was held by a Nigerian zoo, but all attempts to contact the supposed collection were ignored. Eventually she was paired with a male Rufous Fishing Owl and laid several eggs which were destroyed by the staff who did not want to produce hybrids.

Personally I think they should have hatched a chick. None of the Scotopelia are known to have bred in captivity and some useful data may have been obtained eg, incubation period, growth rates, fledging time. All I know is that the eggs were white. I may have a photo somewhere.

The Mauritius Kestrels would appear to be a last ditch attempt to breed them again in the UK. However on my last visit (end of May) they were not paired. This species never did very well at Chester. Thankfully they are now safe in the wild owing to the joint efforts of Dr Carl Jones in Mauritius and Jersey Zoo. I'm sure the zoo will replace then with an endangered bird species once these birds have died.

0.2 White-crested Turacos are in the upper aviaries in the Tropical Realm, probably bred at Waddesdon last year. I'm sure the zoo are looking for a male. They are lovely birds. (And this is a statement from someone not usually impressed by turacos.)
 
Thaks Bongorob. I have seen the verminculated fishing owl. She has been there a while I know. I'm not sure whether the zoo will ever get addax. It's nearly been a year now that they've been waiting for them. Arabian oryx maybe?

Pied tamarins. Which way does Chester plan to go with this species. Ther's only one female at the moment. Did the other die? Is a new male arriving?
 
I think they will get addax, you know. They seem to be in the very final stages and they've even added them to the zoo maps got all the singage sorted. It has been a long wait but I reckon in the next few months fingers crossed.
 
Penny told me the zoo was actively looking for a male Pied Tamarin. The problems are

1. He should be as unrelated to the female as possible.
2. A male could not be kept with 2 females.
3. Finding someone who wants a female.

Like Chirs I'm sure Addax will eventually arrive. It took about 4 years to bring in Bongos, and that was from England. The Warty Pigs took 3 years to come to Chester. Tim says it took 8 years to import Spotted Deer (and that was only from France)

I don't know if one female at Chester has died or if she has been exported.
 
I don't know. Probably they would fight. I guess a pair and their young would live together as a family, like the Geoffroy's Tamarins, but a stranger would not be tolerated.
 
they are monogamous as grantsmb says. In the wild the groups are composed of the adult pair and their young from previous years. In zoos (if they are kept as a pair) the male carries the young but in the wild in their group the other males take turns carrying the young (the breeding male doesn't normally do this apparently)
 
I was at Chester Zoo on 14th July

There was no sign of any Jaguar cubs, and no signs saying they have bred. ISIS shows no cubs born within the last 6 months. I guess the young jaguars were not reared.

what is the latest with the addax and the goitred gazelle? or is it all up in the air due to the fmd outbreak in surrey. with all these huge paddocks in that are of the zoo has it not for years now been vastly underused with animals such as scimitar horned oryx, american bison, guanaco and the like is it not the time now to start bringing in some more unusual cattle, deer and antelope for this area. maybe the above species are a start along with the grevy's zebra and vicuna.
 
sorry, just on foot and mouth, what precautions do uk zoos take about this, and is there a hightened sense of alert in the zoo community?
 
This time around the gov put a complete ban on movement of livestock as soon as it had been confirmed.

They also put in a place a 3km protection zone with a greater 10km surveillance zone. Am not completely sure what these are for, the protection zone i think means theres limited access to the area and the surveillance zone is the area they will keep the closest eye on to make sure it hasn't spread.
 
Marwell, which is not that far away from the outbreak(about 40 miles),has a very large collection of hoofed stock. They have disinfectant footbaths for the public to walk through at the entrance area. Other zoos may be doing similar, they certainly will if there's any danger of this F & M outbreak spreading- which is fortunately looking less likely at present.

The zoo is going out of Blue Eued cockatoos. One female died, I believe of old age, and the others, Excluding the remaining male, were sent off to a private collection in france.
The mount Apo lorikeets are moving into the rare parrot breeding centre.
Philipppine Crocodiles have been dicussed.
Bali mynahs have moved into Islands in danger.
There is a male Babirusa due to arrive soon. The Second male, Tim, From Marwell, was incredibly old and has died.
The new female indian rhino will be on-show in October/November.
A new male Komodo has arrived from Rotterdam.

Do you think they could be considering some sort of Philippine themed area with the Warty Pigs, Spotted Deer, Hornbills and crocs etc? I don't know where they would build it but it would be a great idea for an exhibit and would complement Islands in Dangers and any Madagascan developments as a sort of Island zone.
