At the entrance for Chester Zoo there is a sign stating that Chester is the United Kingdoms number one zoo. Is this a self-proclaimed title or does somebody award it?

Hey, I dont know for sure but I do know its the no. 1 charity zoo so maybe its in terms of the amount of visitors they get annually and their income? I would guess it would be something statistical like that but this is just a guess!

I believe it is because it has been the most visited zoo in the UK for the past two years(excluding the zoo/theme park hybrids)

I can't remember the exact figures, but it was in a thread on here not too long ago

When I visited San Diego a few years back I went on the bus ride around the zoo first. The guide said "Welcome to the best zoo in the world. And what makes us the best zoo in the world? Because we say we are!"

I guess the thinking at Chester is probably not that different, if a little more modest.

Am pretty certain its a self proclaimed titile, one which they probably are correct on. Which is more can be said another collection in the UK.

To be honest, I never like it when other zoos say things like that, probably because opinion is so wide. For example, I visited Chester in 2006 and whilst I was extremely impressed Marwell is still the 'best' zoo in my own personal opinon because it's the zoo I've grown up with and closest to my heart: The same could be said for regulars from London, Edinburgh, Colchester, Paignton, etc.

It's true- the best zoo to you is personal, Chester is mine as you say Marwell Dalek, its my local zoo and I know it like the back of my hand. Its familiar, I can go easily and it makes me happy! I do love to visit new zoos to though, to compare and see different species and there are so many to see!! What is Marwell like as a zoo? I have never been.

should go, outstanding collection of antilope, lucky for me, i go twice per year

Chester have won an award for the best toilets.

As for actually viewing the animals I think Chester is one of the worst with all the shrubs and bamboo obscuring the fences.

Can't please everyone, I love this about Chester. Glimpse of an animal is far more rewarding than watching them sitting there.

Toilets are very good tho! Lol. Can be good to let the animals have a bit of privacy as much as possible. I have been to Chester many many times and have not seen the tigers that often but I like that, makes it better when you do get a peek!
Does anyone know which spectacled bears chester has now? Sorry I cannot remember their names but was told about the male killing the female and then one being sent to a different zoo do to their stereotypes. We have been told at Uni that the stereotyping has been reduced due to dental problems being sorted but apparently the keepers have managed to make them do this behaviour in a place where the public cannot see now! Don't know if this is true, just what we have been told by a lecturer. Anyone have any updates on this?

Sorry but I can't believe Chester would train a bear to do it off-show?

Maybe thats the real reason they got shut of Birma?

Chester original bought two male bears (Valintine & Strolch), then swapped one male (Valintine) for a female (Loja). The male (Strolch) had to be put down due to health reasons. Chester recieved a new male (Sergay) and he killed the female (Loja). Now Chester only have 1.0 (Sergay) bears at the moment. (I know all the names but can't spell them)

I'd have been careful about posting that. Someone at Chester may take offense to that statement if it isn't true

As was mentioned in another thread about stereotyping in elephants, if a zoo receives an animal with this established behaviour derived from its previous living conditions, there is not much they can do to cure it and its no reflection on the current environment. But of course it looks bad to the public who think the animal is 'unhappy' in its present conditions.

Well yes thats true but that was quite a statement by Han4444,

Forget which Elephant it was (Thai maybe) was showing sterotypically behaviour today in the middle of the elephant paddock.

I'm pretty sure it's Thi (probably from her London years).

If Chester is "covering up" stereotyping then why is one of the star attractions (the elephants) not being hidden?

It's these sort of unsubtantiated claims that lead to anti-zoo people starting campaigns...

Actually IF;) they have 'taught' the bear to stereotype out of sight I think its a very sensible thing to do:) Most stereotypical behaviour occurs in 'bursts' the animal standing or going to a particular place in the enclosure while it goes through its routine. All they would be doing IF its true is conditioning the bear to do it in a more private place. Not a 'cover up' but rather common sense husbandry.

BTW How did we get from 'Titles' to 'stereotyping in Spectacled Bears' so rapidly..

You already know my favourite boastful title- a certain 'World Primate Centre'.....

Im sorry to have put something that may have seemed like a substantial statement it really was not meant to be at all. I was just curious as to the bears they currently had. I was by no means trying to start a debate regarding stereotyping or trying to comment on the husbandry at chester, which I think is brilliant for the record. I was simply repeating what I had been told, no offence meant what so ever, so sorry if I caused any.
