Chester Zoo Roan Antelope

1.2 Roan Antelope are now in the lechwe paddock. The zoo was extremely busy today and the queues in the cafes and for the boats were enormous.

The new babirusa enclosure looks finished.

A sign at the entrance to the Ladies' toilet opposite the jaguars warns people that swallows are nesting there.

Good news that that Roans have arrived at last will be good to have this species back at the zoo as they are one of my favorites.

I like Roan antelope too. Any idea where these came from- UK or Europe? There are comparatiely few elsewhere in the UK- only at Marwell, Whipsnade and Port Lympne.

Thanks to Bongorob, I know these came from Marwell and there may be more on their way.

Only saw two of them today, If I get chance I will upload some pics.

Fantastic news! We love the Roans! They did have rather a large herd at Marwell when we were last there.

Agreed too few of these handsome antelope in the UK, but it surprises me there are even fewer sable antelope in only one collection

No they are next to the Przewalski Wild Horses.

They were house together today. There is a few (maybe a few too many for some members ) pics uploaded in the gallery of them.

Fantastic news! We love the Roans! They did have rather a large herd at Marwell when we were last there.

They did have a large group at Marwell but all but a few seem to have disappeared from there- were most of them exported or are they still there? On ISIS some groups of Roan are listed as subspecific hybrids and I think that included most of Marwell's and those at Port Lympne as well.

Although its not that important, I'm wondering which particular individuals(Pure or 'hybrid') Chester have received?

Yay! You can never have too many antelopes in a zoo if you ask me. Roan's wouldnt be top of my list (id have prefered a comeback for the Sable Antelopes) but im still very pleased.

Very sad regarding Fey though

Addax where going to go where the Cheetahs are now but there were problems with bring them in so it never happened.

It is a shame that it didn't happen although I do love the new cheetah enclosure.
