I have been asked a billion times by my friend if Asian and African elephants can breed together. Can this happen? If not why?

African and Asian elephants can interbreed although, to the best of my knowledge, only one African elephant x Asiatic elephant hybrid has ever been recorded.

A hybrid named "Motty" was born at Chester Zoo in 1978; it only lived a few days. Its mounted skin is at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London although, sadly, this unique specimen is no longer on display at the museum.

I was just thinking, and I know this doesn't have a lot to do with what was said above, but I just want to ask the question; have any zoos created woodland/rainforest habitats for their asian or african forest elephants in which the elephants have access to live vegetation?? If so, how do they protect the vegetation or stop the elephants from completely destroying everything??

yes, sheba is actually still at chester.
but I wonder how similiar are african and asian elephants in dna? like 98% 97%??
