Zoos around London

You can get the train direct from Romford to Colchester?! Dang, this sh****le may have something good about it after all :D

Jacobea you would have to change at Shenfield but it is really good value!

Train approx £20 for in the week from liverpool street
All day bus ticket for Colchester approx £4
Admission to zoo £14.99

Colchester has been doing this for a few years now

Thanks for all the possibilities. Where is Colchester Zoo in relation to London? Like NW or NE? It looks like a good zoo but I'll see what happens when I get my hotel picked and plans are made.

I was unfamiliar with Chessington. I will be in London at the end of October (2009). Someone tell me honestly, is it worth it if I'm only interested in the animals (not the rides)? The fact that it is walking distance from the train station is a bonus.

Ive never been myself, but it dosnt look like it as enough animals to mae a day out of it.

Arizona Docent - I haven't been to Chessington since I was a little kid, but from what I've read on the Chessington threads here on the UK forum, when they shut the rides down for the winter, you can get tickets into the zoo part at a reduced cost. However, I don't know when in "winter" they shut the rides

I wouldn't put chessington down as a must see, it has a medium size collection mainly a mix of primates, big cats and birds. There aren't many species you wouldn't have seen any where else. If your interested in fish there is the small but interesting sealife centre on site. If your interested in animals ONLY i wouldn't waste your money going to chessington.

Your right, i think the timescale is between the October half term and February half term where the zoo entrance fee is cheaper and you can just access the animals enclosures, this is great for people interested only in the animals.

or mums who know they are going to get nagged to go on rides :D

Next summer, I may get the wonderful chance of going to the UK for the first time and I was interested in what good zoos are around London. I'm asking because I'm not really familiar with all the European Zoos and many are named after places that I'm unfamiliar or have a name that is unrelated to their location. So what good zoos shall I check out around London? How far is the drive to some other good places like the Chester Zoo? I know I'll probably check out the London Zoo of course and Whipsnade. I might also not stay in London or somewhere else because there are various hotels that my family could stay at for a week for free. Any recommendations?
Everyone has mentioned the bigger zoos what about Battersea Childrens zoo which is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in London and there is also the Horniman Museum which has an aquarium in it's building.

^ Haha, oh the fun of theme parks!

Just looked it up on the website

Opening Times for Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo

The zoo days run for several days in September and October and then the whole month November and December.

might have to take a trip up there then, its awful really we live in a poor area where most of the families are on benefits and they sent home a leaflet for chessington, with the message to the kids to nag to go

i said in another part of the forum i don't agree with zoo's however i have spent a lot of time reading threads about various local zoo's and i figure that i was soo wrong.

anyways another question, i'm tempted to get a zookeeper for a day experience for my son for xmas, i think he'd love it, has anyone done this and any tips as to which of the zoo's is best for this? from the research i've done this is quite expensive so i want to make sure that i choose the right zoo.

thanks :D

That's got to be the lowest form of advertising, that truly upsets me when you see these little kids getting so excited and the parents thought of having to fork out their months pay to satisfy the "needs" of the ever money thirsty attraction parks. Possibly destroying the parents bank balance as if they aren't already in debt. *moan over*

i wouldn't mind so much, but until i came on here i didn't even know that chessington had a zoo  and if the school want them to go so much then let them take them

Thanks for the advice. Seeing I will only have a few days in London, I will not waste one at Chessignton. (I have already planned one day at Port Lympne). Did anyone notice the photo of the tiger mother with cubs on the Chessington website? The mother is severely crosseyed (which means inbred) - why are they allowing her to breed?
