Paignton Zoo Paignton in the rain

I went to Paignton yesterday for the third successive year. On my previous two visits it had been very wet, so I hoped this time it would be different. It was, it was very, very wet.

I missed lemurs, cassowaries, owls, big cats and the apes. It didn't seem worthwhile to get soaked looking at exhibits I'd seen before.

Walking up the sloping paths was like white water rafting.

Only a few of the animals were out, barbary sheep, bongos, lechwe, anoas and giraffes apparently don't mind monsoon conditions.

I saw the Oriental White Stork but I can't use my camera in the rain. Nearby is an aviary with Scarlet Ibis, it's either new or one I have not noticed before.

I saw the cusimanses in their temporary home at Monkey Heights.

A Cuban Crocodile is in with a Nile Crocodile, it looked pure bred. I could not get a close look at the Cuban Crocodile in the Cuban Croc enclosure. I could not get near the Saltwarer Crocodile for people sheltering from the rain.

There was some rain damage in the zoo shop.

I went to get some food from the kiosk opposite Monkey Heights and the lady who served me used to live in the street next to mine.

Wow, and I felt bad about having drizzle at Port Lymnpe two weeks ago!

Bongorob- sounds like the highlight of a very frustrating visit. you had to be unlucky as I think even SW England has had a lot of dry weather in the last few months.

As Basil Fawlty once said, "we've got palm trees in Torquay!"

Still, I can only remember one sunny visit to Paignton...

The weather in Paignton's been fabulous lately but I think we had several weeks worth of rain yesterday! The moat round the orangutan island has been looking very low, almost crossable by a determined orang, but I guess it's full to the brim again now. Sorry you chose the wrong day, bongorob.

One good thing about all the rain was the lack of huge crowds. I sat for almost an hour in the desert house and saw about 6 people altogether, and one of those was a keeper.
