ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Animal Escapes.

i've only seen two escapes in a Zoo, one was at chester when a serval escaped a few weeks ago actuly, and an elephant at blackpool (crumple), i don't know if the serval was shot (probably not), but in blackpool they had a JCB to push the elephant back into the hedge and into the enclosure.

Anymore info on the serval an how it escaped???

Has crumple been put down now (at a convenient time to coincide with a BBC documentary involving an elephant PM), or was it one of the other eles?

Toronto Zoo had escapes from Ground Hornbill (shortly after the African Savannah was opened), Amur Tiger (she just wandered out into the barrier area and was coaxed back in), Arctic Wolves (after some ***** decided to cut through a fence) and way, way back, a Western Lowland Gorilla before they put a top on the top of the outdoor exhibit.

Another Grorilla was out briefly the other day at Riverbanks Zoo, Columbus USA. Funny thing is it go back into the enclosure itself after about five minutes freedom and none of the staff are now sure exactly which of the three Gorillas in the enclosure was the escapee. They believe it grabbed hold of some overhanging bamboo-this indicates it was the male as he would have a longer reach....

one news story of this which I had read said that the gorilla charged and swiped at an employee who then "played dead" until the gorilla had returned to the enclosure

Yes, I read that too. Again it sounds like 'male' behaviour- a female at large in zoo grounds would normally be scared & pretty harmless. The odd thing about this story was the Gorilla re-entered its enclosure voluntarily so that they aren't sure which one it was. Bizarre situation?:)

all i saw was keepers rounding the rest of the cats in the hut, then they searched the enclosure found nothing and reported a serval missing on a "walkie talkie", evacuated the area, ovbiously i watched from the fluresent fence to see what happened but some serious dude in a suit told me and the rest of the on-lookers to back off and that's all i know, anymore info???????

Can you remember the date this happened because i asked a few people about this at the Chester AGM and they all said that none of the Servals had got out at Chester!!!

I also spoke to one of the senior keepers at the zoo about this who told me the incident never happened:mad:

Also, can you elaborate on the elephant escape that you said happened at Blackpool? I asked earlier but you chose to ignore it.

He's done that on a few posts where i've questioned his information...

I think it's just someone who wants a bit of attention:rolleyes:

I`ve also checked this out with people who have good connections at Blackpool and they know nothing about this escape either!

Especially considering that now they have that massive steel fence up.

A Snake escaped from the Welsh Mountain Zoo.

It was a pregnant and now the welsh mountain zoo is full of them! look at trees and you sometimes see them hanging from them. Also the Bermese python escaped when it pushed the corigated plastic roofing up but didnt get too far and the roof was replaced.

There are two maccaws on a podium that regularily get off and go for walkies. A wallaby has managed to escape somehow over the fence. The training birds sometimes decide not to cooperate with the trainers and decide to sit in the trees.

ive heard before from keepers about animals escapaing and keeping it quiet. perhaps its insurance related? one keeper ive spoken too that used to work in colchester said an orangutan escaped and walking into a display area and just sat next to a petrified visitor. however she was calm and was simply walked back into her enclosure.

Umm its an italian snake. the one that is used in the famous "staff and snake" asclapian symbol. The name of the snake escapes me though. its a non poisoness constrictor that grows to about 6ft long. We always get visitors running up saying that a snakes escaped. ive seen them a number of times.
