Chester Zoo Bornean Orangutans

The anniversary edition of Z magazine mentions that there is SIX bornean orangutans at the zoo.

Am assuming that this went to print before the new arrival (Leia's offspring)? So who is the sixth Orangutan?

Tuan (M)
Martha (F)
Sarikei (F)
Leia (F)
Iznee (M)

That makes five on my count?

If I see a keeper later today I will ask them.

Thanks, I hadn't actual seen that before.

Seems that Tuan could be given access if they could isolate the females in the nearest indoor area of the old house via the old off-show area, but this would mean he would have no where to hide or go off-show if needed.

Excellent find! Thank you.
This will be very useful for my colleague who teaches Collections to our Animal Care students - it will make them think about the building when they visit RotRA.
Do you know of any more goodies on this site? I couldn't get access to anything else
EDIT - I've hacked it now. If anyone's interested, start at the CZS frontpage and then go to Animal Care.

Interesting after reading Z magazine from front to back (scan it at first usually :p). On page 4 it says that there are 4 Bornean Orangutans, than after the birth of one there is now 6! (page 21)

Also since when did chester only have 8 Sumatran Orangutans? I count 9 unless the sub-adult male has been moved on?

I thought there were only 8:

Adult male & dad to 5 youngsters - Puluh

Sisters Emma (mum to juvenile male Padang, older infant male Utara and infant female Indah) & Subis (mum to older infant male Budi and baby female Kirana).

Perhaps the articles were written at different times.

By my reckoning there ought to be 5 Bornean and 8 Sumatran.

Is there not another female born to Subis?

Her eldest daughter(forget her name:rolleyes:0) was sent to Europe a couple of years ago. Both females have had three offspring, pretty much in parallel timewise with each other too.

Jambi? I didn't know they'd had another offspring.

That's it, Jambi. she went to Budapest(or Bucharest?) Emma & Subis each have a small infant(their third babies) as per above- one born last year(?), one born this year in February.

Taun. To be a real 'Ape Freak' you've just gotta keep up...;)

Let me guess, I think your principal favourite species are Gorilla, Orangutan, also okapi & maybe Indian & Black rhino?- how close am I? (same as me....;);))
