Chester Zoo Bornean Orangutans

I think it is a real criticism of the zoo management and their design philosophy that they haven't even put up a notice by the viewing windows for the Bornean orangs - of course if they did, it would slow the flow of visitors through RotRA even more than the design of the building does now. But the opportunity to do so some real public education is being wasted.

I agree, there are no signs at all about the individual orangs like there were in the old house, and no notices about the babies. This is a shame when you consider what an achievement it is to have all 4 females of reproductive age (not counting Martha:D) with small babies at the same time. Viewing from the (relatively small) windows is a drawback of the new house if it is crowded. I managed to see all four babies the other day but most visitors didn't seem to notice them all, the Borneans in particular. I suppose us lot are a bit more observant as well as better informed. For example I was surprised that no other visitors seemed to notice hornbills nesting, and there were three species to choose from (and hornbillcam was operating which was a bit of a hint).

I agree entirely, the viewing facilities at Chester are poor when busy particularly when considering the large area that the orangs have to roam in. The heat is usually a factor which necessitates me to leave quickly before I pass out and getting out is often difficult when crowded!! More individual information would be great on the orangs - particularly the Bornean, which seem to be almost an after-thought. As for folk not noticing what is around - it seems to be the norm with a lot who just dash around from enclosure to enclosure - almost disengaged sometimes! I often wonder why they paid to go in!!
