See now you have provided enough information for someone to answer your question, if you had wrote this as your first post you wouldn't of got a silly answer to the silly question.

If I remember rightly, I was told that when he mated a particular female, he caused a very nasty gash in her side with his claws, and after this had happened a couple of times, it was decided to give him the snip as she was getting really badly injured each time they mated :(
 
Notes from my lovely, sunny visit today:

- Saw Isabella's calf today, very cute indeed.
- New nest boxes had been built for the ibis, night herons and egrets of Marabou Mansions.
- Kismet was joined by two more giraffes in the valley today.
- The tamarins were very close to the public in the walkthrough, very unusual.
- Black rat enclosure still under renovation work.
- Speaking to a volunteer, the black wildebeest have now arrived at Marwell and are off-show. They will go on display in a couple of weeks in the chapman's zebra paddock.
- I only saw Arica today, I hope nothing's happened to Ernesto.
- Kiska kept responding with a small yowl if I called out her name, somewhat touching. :rolleyes:
- Saw some fantastic cheetah behaviour: Three congo buffalo were charging up by the enclosure, and Paka kept on leaping, chasing and growling after them, and vice versa.
 
Regarding the other giraffes in the valley, were they the adult females or the calves (or both)?

Interesting news about the wildebeest. I look forward to seeing them :)
 
They were the two calves. ;)

He didn't specify. It'll probably mean the vicuna will have to find another enclosure to move to.
 
For them posters: when you post could you pse not just use the individual animal names only, but at least list the species you are referring to. Some of us do read those posts and - to be honest - sometimes it borders on the gibberish. :eek:

Now on to Marwell matters: what is the long term giraffe breeding plan (with both Rothschildt's and hybrids) at Marwell?
 
Marwell once had a herd that peaked at 14 until recentley when there was a series of deaths in the prime members of the herd, (Christopher, Biffa, Grace and Mary) and three giraffes were sent to Folly Farm in Wales. Kismet arrived last year and Marwell has plans to restock the herd from him. He sired two calves last year and Isabella gave birth to his third last week.

I'm sorry to disagree with you, Marwell Dalek, but I think you'll find that last year's calves, Christa and Tiye, were actually sired by Christopher. He died whilst Matilda and Mary were pregnant. So, this new calf is Kismet's first at Marwell (and possibly his first ever calf, I'm not sure) ;)

Either way, a spark in a hopefully bright future.
 
Thats great news about the Wildebeest cant wait to see them. im off work for two weeks in July will be going to Marwell fingers crossed their be on show by then:):)
 
They rotate the anteaters around don't they, that's probably why you didn't see Ernesto.
 
No, Arica was shut into her side, it was Ernesto's time to be outside; he was probably hiding behind some shrubs in all honesty.
 
I saw both Anteaters today, so they're both still there.

Other things I noticed, was five very cute ostriches have hatched. The keeper I spoke to was not aware that they had hatched so I'm guessing it was quite recent. The marmosets have gone from opposite the fossas and there is a sign up saying that they are in the Tropical House, however, they're not, so I don't know where they've gone.
 
Were the ostriches the ones in the valley, or the ones in the scimitar-horned oryx paddock? I look forward to seeing them!

Interesting about the marmosets. I wonder if they will be on display in Tropical World next time I visit? I missed out on visiting this weekend, so hopefully will go next Sunday :)
 
They were the ones in with the Oryx and Zebra. If I remember right, the keeper I spoke to called the dad 'Boomer' when I showed her a picture of the chicks on my camera.

I'm going next Sunday too. I look forward to probably bumping into you and not realising until we each get home and compare pictures. :D

I'll probably go next week too if the weather's good to see if the wildebeest are on show: Three way! :p
