Toronto Zoo Elephant Activists!

How can they say an elephant would live longer in the wild than in captivity? 40 years is the average life span. With Tessa's case, her death was accidental. And as far as I know, the Toronto Zoo treat the elephants well. The keepers teach the elephants to co-operate with them. The keepers don't train them to act a certain way. In a behind-the-scenes I when to last year, the keeper mentioned that they do not go in the encloser with the elephants. I think the protestors over-reacted. No, animals really shouldn't be in zoos, but if the Toronto didn't take in the elephants after their mothers were killed, would any of them be alive today?

The activists can all go to hell, why don't they target real suffering animals like circus elephants?

I think the first time they went in with the elephants since atleast 1998 was during Tessa's accident

Well certainly makes you sound like an activist...
They are stupid though, elephants in the wild HAVE to travel those distances to get food, do they honestly think a 70 year old elephant would be able to keep that up?

How does this make me an activist, Circuses are terrible places

Because you stated that something is terrible and that all circus elephants suffer. That's exactly what activists do about zoos and we all know that isn't the case. Take this to the circus thread should you wish to carry it on, I hate hijacking ;)

Tessa's accident isn't really what I meant. I meant going in with the elephants for stuff like training them, or going in with them just to feed them.

Look, I just had an opinion that all of us share on ZooChat about circuses so don't flip your balls out on me

I would rather they have protested at those dreadful roadside attractions with regards to ANY species being kept there, and/or raised funds to expand elephant exhibits at Toronto and elsewhere. Once our elephant exhibit hopefully gets renovated and expanded, maybe the zoo can take in some cows that would otherwise be culled. It'd be a terrific way to saving lives and a good move for the gene pool as well if breeding is planned.

Didn't want to sound like I was "Flipping my balls out", I just stated a fact. It just annoys me with the tarring. And not ALL of zoochat share that opinion :)

I've found THE SUN tends to sensationalize things, so I'm not really surprised on the article that's been written :P. I find it shocking and unreasonable that activists are blaming the zoo for Tessa's death though...I guess if they had put Tessa in solitary confinement she would still be alive, but then those same activists would be claiming cruelty for keeping her away from the herd. These things are bound to happen in any social heiarchy; and it's always easy to point fingers and push the blame on when you're on the outside looking in.
